Last of all instead of breaking any confidences I sent a note to D's doc. I've put in the note that his childhood doc will have a lot of info and other stuff like there being no point asking D how he is - that it's better to ask how things are going, if he's looking for work, has he been socialising etc - ie specific questions rather than D's opinion. Then he can ask why and get more info.
