it's hard to comment without knowing the full story of why you guys broke up, what his grief is, and why his family seemingly wants him to stay away from you.
If he feels he's not good for you, I'm not sure what you could say to change his mind.
I do notice he went straight from you to someone else.
Maybe whatever is going on is something he really needs to work out for himself, alone?
