The gloxinia is commonly found in the Andes of South America or the jungles of Central America. I am too old to travel there and avoid such places since I would rather not acquire tropical diseases which may distort my appearance. (See the recent book on the "White City" of the Monkey God in Spanish Honduras) One variety, Gloxinia erinoides (syn. Koellikeria erinoides), is said to be cultivated as a house plant. I do not keep a cat, because I rather dislike a cat's eating them and vomiting Gloxinia erionides all over me. Or, with the larger cats, being eaten by them and having them vomit all over my houseguests.
This, I readily admit, is a failing on my part due to an excess of hospitality.
All this is perhaps why Oscar Wilde preferred lilies. A lily is too high for a cat to reach and more challenging for it to vomit.
