It was different with my mother, she is a bonafide sadist who enjoys hurting people. It's not the kind of thing you just "get over" and it really did rob me of a life. You don't just go get treatment in a neat little package and call it a day when the first half of your life was spent literally being tormented by the person who was supposed to protect you, and this is very hard to live with. It also makes pretty much all of life really difficult, painful and confusing.
