If you've read anything about the kindling effect you'll know that withdrawals can get more severe each time...
It could also be argued that increased anxiety in a contributing factor - if we have some idea of what were in for, it can be pretty scary and that in fact contributes to the severity...kind of a self fulfilling prophecy in the worst way.
