maybe he's just scared out of his mind to lose his comfort zone and his family? Without us, he has nobody except a few acquaintances.
My ex used to say that over and over again, that I was the only one he had, that me and the kids were the only people he had, that he had no friends, that nobody else cared about him.
FFWD to two weeks after I left him and he's got 200 new friends on Facebook, most of them caring young women who posted messages of support and invitations to coffee or dinner or "whatever you need, I know you're in pain, hugs!" kind of things. (And he was an old guy!!!)
So don't let "he doesn't have anyone else" ever hold you back. Trust me, he will FIND a new set of codies to coddle him and support him. They always do.
