Incidentally, my doctor (when I finally found a good one after I got sober) said he didn't do liver checks on alcoholics because it can give them a green light to continue, which coincidentally was exactly what happened to me. I had numerous blood tests for my liver and kidneys when actually it was my nerves which were taking the brunt of the damage.
