As an ex-alcoholic and having dated a few alcoholics myself. I'd suggest leaving him. Explain that you're not going to be with him as long as he's drinking. If he cares enough to quit after that, you can always take him back. But you don't want to be stuck with a drinker forever, especially not if it's already a problem.

Rarely do people actually change. What you see is what you get. If he's a drinker that makes promises to quit and doesn't... there's a good chance that will continue for a long time.
