After nearly 30 years of drinking, I'm now over 3.5 years happily sober with no formal program. I guess I'm just one of those that's been able to do it this way. I made several half-hearted efforts in the past, but I just wasn't ready to quit. I think the one common trait, regardless of recovery method, is the sincere desire to stop. Until one gets to that point, it's much more difficult.
