I always thought they knew, but just weren't ready to quit or were ready to go through withdrawals.
I don't agree with that statement the way he's saying it.
Until an addict reaches bottom (whatever that may be for them) they do not seek help nor do they truly want to recover.
I knew I was an alcoholic long before I reached my bottom that made me desperate enough to seek help and actually do the work to recover.
