As an alcoholic, I can vouch for that statement. I'm sure there were times when I truly only had two beers, but that was the extreme exception. "Two beers" usually translated to "saying I only had one beer is not credible, but saying exactly how much I drank will only start an argument." Which may be why he was so annoyed by your pushing back - can't even lie about his drinking without catching crap about it.
