Yes, it does take a bit longer than 2 weeks, and I can only tell you of MY experience...the ones I hurt the MOST, I felt the most guilt about and it took a while to get over that guilt and reach out to them.
I think the card and cig money was a nice gesture. I understand the sadness, but I think you're doing remarkably well. Hope you get some better weather, soon. I have relatives up there, and they've been pretty snow-bound, too.
