Something that's not been mentioned so far is the "responsibility" thing. Alcoholics are really good at making others responsible for their "recovery." He needs you to help him or he just can't do it. Ah, yes, the perfect way out. When his "recovery" fails, it will then be your fault because you just weren't supportive enough, or not in the right way. So then he will have no choice but to go back to drinking and it will not be his fault at all, but yours. Been there, done that.
