So There I was At The Grocery Store ....

... with my best firend
who is in her seventies ...

and someone calls my name.

I turn around -=
it's *-*, one of the women who came to my house
and 12th stepped me
four years ago when I stopped drinking.

I hadn't seen her in over a year or so
it's amazing considering how small a city Butte is
that you can go so long without running into people.

We hug -
and she proceeds to tell me that she's just out of rehab -
she went back out earlier in the year.
She was back to collapsing veins,
scraping for the next fix ...
the whole enchilada.

Then she went into hospital
had a thing that wouldn't heal
and got herself MRSA.

She told me she was actually calling her biker buddies
they were bringing her morphine
and she was 'doing up' ON TOP
of the medications
being given to her by her docxtor
while in the hospital!

Now, she and I hit it off
because we're very much similar personalities.
Outgoing, easy to share
foot on the gas kind of people
as opposed to those
who'd go over the cliff
with their foot on the brake.

It was ...
well, I was shaken, to be honest.

I'd so looked up to her
and to her recovery
during those early months in recovery.

I'm so glad she's not dead.

She's got so much to offer the people in the rooms.

It was a good stomp on the foot
that it can always be me.
It can always be ... right there.

Her husband came up
signalling that our visit was over
he's got that
'long suffering spouse' thing
down to an art form...
he never socializes with anyone in the rooms
and makes it a point to say that he hasn't a drug or booze problem...
and won't speak to anyone unless they've been in a biker gang
at some point.

What a crazy way to be.

I don't know what I think about it.
Other than how easily
it coulda been me, you know?

We're all mortal.
We're all flawed.

Of myself - I am nothing.

Man - I'm glad she isn't dead.

MRSA- she coulda come out with no arms or legs.
And I TOLD her that.
And she said -
"You know how we are, Deb -
long as there's somebody to shoot it in the stump
we just don't care....."

Wow.
Freakin' ....wow.

Anyway -
we now return you to your regularly scheduled programs ....
