If I was designing a curriculum, I'd make a list of books and let the class vote on which they'd like to read and discuss. And they wouldnt all be all American and British classics from 100 years ago either. Its the 21st century people. lol
In 12th grade my English teacher gave us a list of about 50 books and told us to pick one and read it. Fahrenheit 451, Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Flies, 1984, Oliver Twist, blah blah blah. I chose my book because the day before the report was due I realized I hadn't read a book yet. So I went to the school library and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was the shortest one I could find, so I read it in one night and got an A on the report. Solzhenitsyn wasn't bad but there are far better books out there, and that list was what my teacher came up with? Sad.
