My daughter is my addict. She tells me that she and her abf spend 23 hours a day trying to find the money to buy the drugs, then trying to find someone to score from, and then getting high. Doesn't leave much time for love or a life outside of addiction. Addiction is progressive. Your boyfriend may have periods of clean time now, but that could change the next time he uses.
