The jester of midieval courts was considered sacred. People believed the fool or jester, the trickster or jokester served God as a messenger of wit, wisdom and laughter. The "fool" was considered "wise". He was the only person that could speak the truth to the king through wit and laughter and help the king see his own human folly.
The clown or jester is found in all the ancient civilizations as well and considered sacred.
