One other thing that could be happening here is that your son may be depressed. My daughter went through something similar when she was 18. Of course she chose to self-medicate with drugs, but I did take her to a therapist, she was put on medication and given counselling. Sometimes depression in someone young will express itself in acting out, being angry, not succeeding, etc. If you think he will go maybe an appointment with a therapist might not be a bad idea.
