Well, as you know, I've had a return of the hormonal boogie man. Night sweats and hot flashes came back after about 5 years -- strong. I called my gyn, and he called me tonight. He told me it's not "unusual" for this to happen. And we both agreed not to go back on HRT. He did say estroven will be helpful. It has a black cohosh (sp?) in it. I think I've read about that on this forum before. Anyway, I'm going to get some. Try it out anyway. Has anyone tried it? What results did you get? He also told me to get exercising more and such. He was glad to hear I quit smoking 3 days ago! Said I was "so cool!" LOL! I've had two days, 14 hours, 37 minutes and 12 seconds. 104 cigarettes not smoked, saving $28.70. Life saved: 8 hours, 40 minutes. Shalom!

Hi Teach, When I looked into Black Cohosh I found that it had been the cause of serious liver disease (autoimmune liver disease) in rare cases. Since I had already been nasty enough to my liver, I decided to live with the hot flashes instead. www.webmd.com/content/article/75/89785.htm It's probably very safe but it might be worth getting liver function tests done. Have you ever heard of Red Clover? It might be worth checking out too!

Hi there I've been in perimenopause for several months and the night sweats, mood swings etc have been unbearable. Until I can get in to see my ob/gyn (Jan/06) I have been treating myself naturally. One of the many supplements I take is Black Cohosh. I'll certainly look into the possible complications as mentioned by Anna, but it's the first I have heard of it. Black Cohosh has been used for years for menopausal complaints, as have red clover and dong quai. I also take a good calmag supplement, omega 3-6-9 and vitamin e each day. Two great sites for information on menopause are www.earlymenopause.com and www.power-surge.com. Personally, I can't live with the symptoms of menopause without some help. If my doc sees fit to put me on HRT I'm all for it. It comes down to quality of life for me, because I'm downright suicidal when I'm mid-cycle. Good luck, hope you feel better soon. Rowan

Thanks, everyone! Anna, you make an important point about side effects. I did talk to the doc about interactions with meds and that was cool. He knows my medical history, so, I'm not too concerned. Oh, and I love www.webmd.com Never heard of Red Clover or dong quai. But, thanks for the info, Rowan. And I try to remember my vitamins each day. Not too good there, though, unfortunately. Probably diet and exercise will work wonders. It usually does! ![]() Shalom!

After reading Anna's reply, I was concerned enough to look further into Black Cohosh. And do you know what? Everything I read is contradictory! One says it's safe and you can take as much as you want when you want with whatever you want. Another says it's a no-no to use in conjunction with anti-depressants! (helllloooo!) Some report higher incidence of sweating when taking certain doses (and I'm taking it for hot flashes?) I'm going to check out that webmd site too, and for now, I'm not taking the black cohosh. I'll stick with the other stuff and wait until Jan to proceed further. This is so frustrating.

It seems that it's caused incidents of autoimmune liver disease, in rare cases. This is a really serious disease and I TRY to not take anything that will upset my liver. I know that every chemical we put into our bodies, whether by eating, smelling or through our skin, have to be dealt with by the liver. However, some things are potentially more harmful than others.
