bizarre online search experience - SoberRecovery : Alcoholism Drug Addiction Help and Information

please read......."security" issue?

so as many of you know i spin fire......well i was doing an online search thru "ask jeeves" & had typed in "fire dancing wings"....on the 4th page of the findings i found a link that brought me right to "white gas addiction" thread here in WIR!

kind of surreal, not sure hhow i feel about it....at first it seemed like a little sign that the good things in my life interconnect......but then i got thinking.......so anyone could hit that link & end up not only at SR, but in WIR, haveing no idea what site they are on, or the rules & regs.........i find this a little disturbing......thoughts anyone?

Well anyone can find us here it is a public place. I don't think anyone can post unless they are registered and if they register and post most likely they will find out it is a fourum for women...and act accordingly...

Web crawlers crawl the web in search of "key words" Maybe the crawlers picked up on the "white gas" or "addiction" or both. so now your post is on a search engine. Same thing happened to me with my screne name

yeah, i know it's a public forum & you do have to register to post etc........felt a bit odd to jump right into a thread ....... i think it just startled me.......but hey!, i made the world wide web!......not really too concerned, it was just so surreal.....maybe i'll go google myself & lighten up!

the crawlers picked up on "fire" & "wings"........nothing about addictions, tho the header underlined was sober recovery, alcoholics & addicts help forum....so that does give an idea where the link goes (laughing at myself)

Yes, this idea has been mentioned before and it is possible that some of our posts could be read by people outside SR.

Personally, I don't really think this is something to worry about, but I understand that it's a little disconcerting. It's something to keep in mind, anyways.

Which leads me to wonder (as I have for some time now) if we're being WATCHED.

Seriously.

I can just picture some college professor of future substance abuse counselors referring students to this site to do *case studies* and write papers.

Makes me wonder whose guinea pig I am.

the way I see it.. no matter who's watching or reading we are here to help ourselves and others.. As long as we are doing that I don't see a big problem. It does make me want to make sure my profile doesn't have information that just anyone can get a hold of. Since as we write here and are able to P.M. one another we can disclose things like that to people we choose. Guess I will go see what info my profile gives. Thanks for sharing.

Always have to be careful when on the web. I never post about where I live, don't have my email listed, or the year of my birthday. Heck most people here probably think my name is Missy!! ( oh wait, maybe it is!?!) LOL

I too would have been shocked to see one of my posts "out there" though.

I have been doing on line recovery sites for 14+ years.

I do not list my e mail but always have used Carol D or slight variation and my location.

Never have I had a mystery contact or a problem.
