| Homework shakes
I hate helping my kids with homework! I don't mind helping, or sitting or teaching, it's the battle that makes me shake! It's so important for kids to learn and I do believe in homework, but my 2nd grade daughter is just going nuts! She missed a few days of school from being sick,so we got the missed school work to do. She has to learn all the continents and the oceans (I had to have my husband put them on the map because I forgot where they all go) Then she has several pages of math too! She only got a 76 on her direction test on maps! I don't think she will do good on this test either because she just will not sit down and write where the continents go let alone memorize them! They just put this stuff in this year to help the kids get ready for the big 4th grade test that is actually a report card on the schools. It's killing me thats for sure! There is not much i can do,but help her learn these things, but lord my nerves are raw with the battle of the wills! Sorry I just had to vent. Ha, i asked my husband to help her yesterday because I was sick and I needed to rest most of the day. I see blank pages and ask "why did't she do her homework". My husband said "she would not do it". In other words he did not make her and i get to do it! Ugh!

Oh Zoomer - The homework struggle. That is one part of raising kids that I really don't have much involvment in since during the school year they are here every other weekend. the only time I getinvolved in stuff like that is when the 13 year old has a big project or report due. As for your husband....My SO does the same thing. I will come home and say, why didn't he take a bath...he will answer, he didn't want to. Or something lame like that. Men, what can you say? Never mind Iknow you, don't answer that. - LOL

wow, yu sound just like me, and that's scarey, i'mthe crazy person in my house about homework and school work, and my husband takes the attitude that he will help if i'm dyeing but other wise it's my job. HA! i have learned over the years ( son in 11th grade daughter in 6th) that sometimes the more we push them to do the work the worse it gets, especially with work that they have to make up, what helped when my kids were younger if they were out sick, and got all the work at one time i would write the teacher a note and ask her to give the child a few days to catch up with the work, most of the time the teacher was understanding and would give them a few days to make up the work, you could give this a try and see if it helps. We also have a deadline for a contest my daughters enter in every year due tommorrow1 ha, they have to enter it because I'm part of the commettee! This whole cold/flu bug has really messed up everything! What I am going to do is make up a game called pinthe name on the continent like pin the tail!!! I just thought of it and it might make her want to learn!

The computer idea is a great one Zoomer. Maybe it'll make it more appealing for your daughter. I know the homework struggle is a tough one and like you said, you just can't let things go because it only gets worse. Have you tried a strict routine - I mean a specific time each day for homework and nothing else or doing homework before a more fun activity? I wish you well with the schoolwork! Love, Anna |

Hi Anna, O yes,we do homework right after school... But because she was absent we have had to do it on the weekend and it's a three day weekend! Monday nights she has reading and she gets her spelling words (20). Tus is math usally 40 problems, then Wens is reading and Thurs is spelling night. That is all fine and well and we can handle that,it's the extras. We did do the contest tonight. I let the kids use my camera and take pictures. $40 later and about 3 hours of running around and fixing the photos in a mat after I got them developed (one hour photo is great),blown up and shrink wrapped them in the mat,we are all done! I did have them try and do poetry, write songs, draw pictures for the past two weeks, but nothing clicked with them. They do love to take pictures and i'm happy to say they did great! Both have a good eye. Ha, the only thing is,is that because they are only a year apart in school they have to compete against eachother. Good thing though is that each kid who enters gets something,so there are no losers! Time to go put the kids to bed and go pick up my son from the mall.

Hiya Zoomer! Oh yea..if it's any consolation I too struggle with the homework thing. And I'm a teacher! I think it's just one of those mom things that hubby's just don't get. If she was older I'd say let her see what happens when she get's stubborn and refuses. But at her age she has no concept of the importance of grades and finishing those tasks we all end up doing for our kids. I have gotten 100's on my ...oops his last two science projects!! Just another fact of life.. but your doing the right thing by making it fun! There are a lot of great sites to help kids.. one of my fav's .. dogpile.com maybe she can get tutoring through the sites.. I can only say hang in there been there and still doing that.. gotta run.. math homework to do.. I mean check |

LOL Chy!!! My daughter and I have a deal with math. I'll only help her if I'm sure she already knows how to do it! I think 40 math problems for a 2nd grader is far too much homework for one night. The reading she does on her own and hey her and her sister took the camera and shot pictures! I just provided the means and the mounting! LOL!!! In the contest that is all they have to do! Now I have to get the beast ready for school. her sister is sick again,so i only have to deal with one today. She is the worst! hates to have her hair brushed!
