Goddess of the Hot Flash....

OMG!

I can't get through a meeting without having to grab something out of my purse to fan with... I've had people move AWAY from me because the fanning gave THEM a chill!!!!!!!

Anybody else living in their own private preview of what HELL is like????

My sponsor's sponsor said they dropped her 'budget' heat amount this year because she went through so much of last winter without the NEED for heat!

I haven't slept for 6 hours in a row for months because of this waking up inferno stuff....

LOL!

There *has* to be a funny side of this?????

I get too warm and then too cold, then back to too warm.

I haven't been the 'right' temperature in years.

I can't temp regulate. I am either blazing hot or freezing. I have every window open and ac on or I am soaking in a hot tub and got the heating pad on me...... it's so much fun. And the chocolate cravings are getting bizarre. I crave it at times and then the rest of the month I have no use for it. It's like being a chocolate abuser....... lol ... Hi my name is meditation and I'm a chocolate user........ imagine a 12 step group for this. Or my family is about to banish me due to running the ac when it's 50 degrees outside. I think it's time for some kind of supplement to help with the wild temp fluctuations.

I love that avatar! that'd be great hanging in the shower or something ! LOL

I completely understand.
I have to call my neighbor to find out what the temperature REALLY is.

I shared with the gorup about the 'foot regulation' system
where you kick off a shoe when you feel one coming on ...
now in the women's group...

you hear shoes dropping to the floor the entire hour!

Well, I thought I would be able to skip menopause seeing as I had a total hysterectomy at 43 years old. WRONG, lol

Then I was diagnosed with diabetes. Unfortunately for me, the diabetes has affected my internal thermometer so now in the heat of summer (100 to 110 highs) I hardly use my evaporative cooler at all because I'm freezing and in the winter the hot flashes hit. I'm already having to change my sheets about 3 times a week from waking up soaked.

You will be over yours soon enough, I suspect based on what my Drs have said I will be living with this the rest of my life, sheesh

My mom's menopause lasted way too many years, as back then there were no hormones to help her. She was literally crazy for almost 10 years, a complete 'wacko'.

Talk to your doctor Barb, (S)he can give you something (non addictive, of course) to help regulate you some. May not take them totally away but should calm them down quite a bit.

Hope that helps.

Love and hugs,

barbd....I got a transdermal hormone patch from my doc that works wonders. If you're interested in more info about it feel free to pm me.. I've been using it off and on for many years. I feel better in every way within a few hours of application.

Yes, I've had an extended experience with the big M, that my doc says is reserved for 7-10% of women. It's been about ten years now...but my symptoms fluctuate, go away and then return. I always have 'dry' flashes and they are sometimes painful. Right now I'm using only an occasional dab of progesterone cream and maybe half of a low-dose of xanax now & then for the moods and sleep disturbances.

Exercise and eating a healthy diet helps me alot...especially the exercise. I like to take a 2 mile long walk at least 5 times a week.

take care and I hope you're feeling better soon....

I've found that while standing in the checkout line at the grocery store when one hits me that a bag of frozen veggies works nicely against the back of my neck. I'm sure I've provided entertainment for more than one shopper!

Freedom - LOL vivid mental image there - in the c/o line w/ frozen peas on yer neck!

here at work - we've a huge walk in cooler for the beer and stuff - I go in there, and look out the door until either it passes, or I get a customer!

CMC-
I would like that info - maybe this new doc will see her way clear to letting me try it?

I swear it feels like I could melt a candle just holding it against my forehead sometimes!

GF -

You make a good point - Imade up my mind years ago, after watching my sister struggle with post-hysterectomy 'crazies' while the docs played around with supplements... I just decided to let it happen. She also had some serious medical 'sides' from all the hormones stuff going up and down...

it's just that fat, old, and ... sweating ... was NOT what I had in mind for the 'mature' years!

lol

hahaha!! Well, from what I have read so far, a good diet and exercise help, and I have both of those down. I had maybe my first hot flash at a meeting yesterday, and I was kinda freaking out thinking it was the flu, but what flu makes your face bright red and hot? hahah

my mom had a terrible time with menopause, I sure hope my enlightened, recovery minded sober self can get through it with a bit more grace than she did hahahah

do you know what was proven MOST effective?

women who had horses .... had almost NO symptoms during menopause.

they had to be around cycling mares.

my God, I miss my mares so very much.

Might check with a doctor about calcium, manganese, vitamin D supplement. It's helped me tremendously. I was scared of hormones, too.

marie-

yeah, I've got 'a lot going on' in other areas physically,
the general opinion of the doc is to get the 'other' controllable first, meanwhile I can melt a candle just by holding it!

plus- some of the medications I'm currently taking can also exacerbate the symptom.

Last night smack dab in the middle of my AA meeting at my home group I had to grab an issue of the Grapevine and furiously fan myself!

I couldn't do the hormone replacement therapy because my sister had breast cancer so I'm at risk but what DID help 100% was a supplement called Black Cohosh. It helped with the hot flashes, the irritability, sleeplessness, night sweats tremendously. Before my menses ended it even help with menstrual cramps and PMS. You can buy it over the counter at most drug stores.

yeah, I have been trying to learn more about the black cohosh thing.... I've got an appt with my doc a week from today and I'll try to remember to bring it up - to maKE Sure it isn't gonna offset any of the other stuff.

For example -
soy will counteract synthetic TSH hormone if you're on thyroid therapy.

that kind of thing.

thanks!

I just know that , we were standing outside, waiting for the priest to come lock the meeting part of the chuyrch where we have our District meetings ...
and I had a hot flash, and no snow landed on me!

I think the heat radiating off of me
melted the snow inches from my face !

it was on my hair,
but nothing on my face -
not even water....
BIZARRE-O, huh????

*stranger than science*

oh well -
it gave us something to laugh about
while we waited.

AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I go months without a period and then...out of the blue, I get a headache, I swear I am being tightened like a spring wound to breaking, I literally came out to recline in the LR last nite and laid there and kicked my legs to release some of the tension. Couldn't sleep.
Sweating all nite, I am used to that.
But, getting fat and being hot all the time, when I was skinny and cold all of the time????
I haven't had my face turn red or anything yet...but I have no tolerance for heat at all.
Yeah the SO is cold from the a/c and I am sitting here sweating.
I put a comforter around him...you can wrap up in the cold, but there is only so naked in the heat! LOL
Whine. This stinks!

I'm with all of you. The hot "flash" only last for a few seconds but may happen 20 times a night? Anvil has told me that's how she STARTED with pre-menopause 10 YEARS ago and where the he!! is the PAUSE in menopause?

I'm with you, Barb - we have the cooler and the freezer at work, and when they can't find me - that's where I am

All I ever buy at the grocery store is cat food/treats...now I'll be the crazy cat lady with frozen peas to her neck!!

My mom died at 50, and I'm 48 and she was sort of in the middle of menopause but also had severe health problems so can't really go by her for an indication of what I'm in for. Her sister, my aunt, had menopause at age 19!!! She said the females in our family are just screwed up - hormonally and also with electrolytes. Soooo, I will be going back to the Estroven, which was working.

I know Anvil started the women2women program and it helped her when the Estroven stopped. I, however, can't afford it, but it's pretty much a lot of supplements, so ya'll may want to check it out. I think the Estroven has the black cohosh in it. Estroven is OTC, BTW.

Hugs and prayers!

Amy
