| Women, Cancer, Alcohol
The Today Show had an amazing segment on women, alcohol and cancer yesterday. It is a highly respected study and quite interesting: 4:10 p.m. ET, Tues., Feb. 24, 2009 WASHINGTON - A study of nearly 1.3 million British women offers yet more evidence that moderate alcohol consumption increases the risk of a handful of cancers. British researchers surveyed middle-aged women at breast cancer screening clinics about their drinking habits, and tracked their health for seven years. A quarter of the women reported no alcohol use. Nearly all the rest reported fewer than three drinks a day; the average was one drink a day. Researchers compared the lightest drinkers — two or fewer drinks a week — with people who drank more. Each extra drink per day increased the risk of breast, rectal and liver cancer, University of Oxford researchers reported Tuesday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The type of alcohol — wine, beer or liquor — didn’t matter. That supports earlier research, but the new wrinkle: Alcohol consumption was linked to esophageal and oral cancers only when smokers drank. Also, moderate drinkers actually had a lower risk of thyroid cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and renal cell cancer. For an individual woman, the overall alcohol risk is small. In developed countries, about 118 of every 1,000 women develop any of these cancers, and each extra daily drink added 11 breast cancers and four of the other types to that rate, the study found. |

You know what? All these shows and 'new' studies are great for the younger folks. I'm done. lol Yes, I could get liver cancer, with all I drank and the fact that my liver sits at a constant 50 to 52 percent function. Yes, I could get pancreatic cancer with all I drank. Yes, I could get esophogical cancer since I already have Barrett's Syndrome (a precancerous condition). Yes I have already had microscopic clusters in my boobs and have had 2 biopsies done, both were dead cancer cells but no live cancer. Oh and I have diabetes too, so could face the loss of limbs and the neuropathy gets worse. I guess because of my age, I just don't care about all these "new" discoveries, what I should or shouldn't eat, h*ll I just want to live in TODAY. I eat as healthy as I can, I enjoy each day, I check my feet etc under bright light each night to make sure I have no open wounds I cannot feel. Sure I've changed my habits. I don't eat much red meat anymore, NOT because of all the studies, but because I found out that the protein from beef is one of the hardest proteins their is for the liver to digest, and I found out that my arthritic joints did much better if I stayed away from red meat. So I do make hanges. Changes that keep my body functioning the best it can today. I'm not that OLD an 'Old Fogey', lmao And to further this rant, I do not believe that a hundred years ago, at least from what I have been able to research, that so many people died from all these different diseases and cancer and heart attacks, etc per capita as do today. Oh and let's not forget all the fatalities from drunk or impaired drivers from some mind altering chemical. Maybe a lot of our health problems are all the PERSERVATIVES put in everything today, and all the 'plastics'. They are finding out what 'plastic' eating and drinking bowls are doing to our canine and feline fur babies. So, our wonderful media can continue to put all this 'wonderful' 'new' scientific information on the air waves. Unfortunately, there is so much of this 'new information' and some of it contradictory, that I see my younger friends ignoring all of it. Me, I just going to continue to trudge along, doing the best I can with what I have. Okay, rant over. roflmao All the above is J M H O Love and hugs,
