The Gal In The Glass
The Gal In The Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you queen for a day
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what THAT gal has to say.
For it isn't your husband or family or friend
Who judgment upon you must pass;
The gal whose verdict counts most in the end
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think you a straight-shootin' chum
And call you a person of place
But the gal in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look her straight in the face.
She's the gal to please, never mind all the rest
For she's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the gal in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the gal in the glass.
Dont just count your days...Make your days count!
It may not get easier, But it will get better.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak;
courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

This is from AA literature. I was at a meeting recently when a guy was sharing about it. Dunno if it is international literature or orginated from a certain country. I.e. New Zealand
The guy (at the meeting the other night) was talking about how he hadn't seen the phamplet it is in for years and years.
I remember this because I got given the phamplet when I first started attending AA and it had quite a profound affect on me. I'd never even wondered what I thought of myself till then. I was always too busy blaming and complaining about everyone else making my life s**t.
It's great eh? Where'd you come across it?

I am so grateful that I am able to look in the mirror and not hate the person looking back at me!
I'd rather live in my car with my dogs than live in a castle without them.

Thanks. That almost hurt to read, and I'm at work otherwise I would have been bawling. But wow... what a poem. I've known for a while now I don't like myself so much, for what I've done to myself and what I've done to my friends. That poem is a kick in the seat though, for sure.

Farther along, we'll know all about it,
Farther along, we'll understand why.

I love that gal in the glass.. It's so true. It wasn't long ago I didn't like what I saw in the mirror however, through lots of hard work and working the program to the best of my ability, I'm actually learning how to love myself and be happy with me when I look into the mirror.

I was 17
As a senior in high school I put this poem in my yearbook as a reminder to myself of the person I wanted to be. 20 years later when I came across my yearbook again I realized how much I needed that reminder. I find myself lost in a world where I feel the need to drink and I don't remember how I got here. I pray that the day comes when I no longer have the need to drink.

3 yrs ago this summer I tried to totally end the life of that gal in the glass-- I truly despised myself, it's been a long road but one I am so greatful to have traveled; I now really LIKE myself and when I see my reflection I just smile and say thank you.
