hi all im just wondering if summer is a triger for anyone else? i have been sober for just over a year and a half . summer still makes me crazy i drank every day, i was functional i love to do things around the house yard work, clean pool, garden, paint just doing projects but i always drank during and after. the problem is i no longer drink but i still have a house and yard that needs TLC every day. and i love to entertain bar-b-q , pool 4th of july you get the picture... i own my own house with a pool and jaccuize (good for me right) i can not use either of them without wanting to drink so bad i can't enjoy them even doing yard work or washing the car sends me in to a tail spin.( i know if that is the least of my problmes ) but i feel if any thing can put me back to drinking this is it. i can not avoid summer or all the things that go along with it. not to forget summer vacations.....and it eats at me every day. so if it has been a triger for you what have you been able to do about it???? i'm not realy in to A.A. or any program realy, a outpatiant thearapy group that i dont like to wine at, is all i do. it makes me allmost hate summer and thats not good....... |

Hi Tee, That's interesting. I don't have the same trigger that you do, but I do have triggers that will transport me instantly to holding a glass of wine. I have had to make a lot of changes in my life and I am not sure what you should do. It seems like 'summer' and everything that goes with it, is REALLY bothering you. Have you considered moving to a place that didn't require so much outdoor work? For instance, if you lived in a condo, then you could spend your outdoor time doing different things like going for a walk or a hike. |

Summer used to bother me. But, we now entertain 'sober' functions in our yard. WE have BBQ's and we light a fire and invite other recovering addicts over and we sit around the bon fire and enjoy each others company. Turn it into something positive.

In summer when I'm having a pool party, my son makes me a cold cocktail of grenadine and fresh orange juice and it's delicious and alcohol free so I don't have a problem not drinking then. indie

Why don't you try reading some recovery meditations in the hot tub....make it about recovery and relaxation...

Triggers are funny things...they are such that if I focus on the trigger...the trigger becomes bigger and badder...But if I look at whatever I am doing as an opportunity to do it sober and be able to enjoy and remember what I am doing and the sense of accomplishment...my joy increases. Before doing the yard work you can drink as much lemonade or water as you woukld like...it is healthy for you. Aftrer the work you can also drink as much water and juice or V8 or whatever...it too is healthy for you and then look around and enjoy the work you did. Triggers can be teachers as well...they can teach us about balance, limitations and boundaries. they can teach us what is healthy for us and what is not.....this is what worked for me...just turning the lenses in my glasses around.

Iced tea, lemonade, jug of ice cold water. Prepare a jug 1st thing in the a.m. and sip away all day, all through the party etc. If you go to a gathering take your jug with you. Good habits must be created and reinforced just like you did with the bad. Summer is great!! Change your thinkin' and your body will follow. Have a fantastic summer well hydrated with your new non-alcoh drink of choice
