I just posted on the main boards but have you ladies who are around my age or older noticed that it's harder to quit the older you get? I've been pondering this for a few here in my life because I just can't seem to stay quit but I noticed that "Almost" evrytime I drink I get drunk and hungover just horrid and getting drunk wasn't as often many years ago (been drinking since 15). I am afraid that iI can't quit and that my body will start to really suffer. I quit for a year years ago and I am thankful I did that so my body could heal. I have put my liver through the ringer for many many years. I have had it checked and all is normal but it doesn't mean i'm not scaring my liver you know. Urgh. Must be genetic. At any rate I am having a hard time stopping. I quit smoking 15 yrs ago and was able to teach myself to drink without smoking...??? Duh. I scare myself at times because I'll get drunk and leave my house or call people i don't wanna talk to or fight with hubby and then the next morning i am usually majorly hungover. It almost is like I can't drink anymore without drinking too much and getting drunk and crazy!! Embarrass myself etc etc.. my poor husband..granted he's had his bouts with drunken behavior but....gosh....i'm suppose to be a lady!!! |

Hi and Welcome, I do think there is still a double-standard, in that, it is more acceptable to see drunken behaviour in men than in women. It is so frowned upon to see a woman drunk. But, I was that woman! I'm older than you and didn't start drinking until my mid-forties, became alcoholic before I knew what was happening and had a really, really hard time stopping. And, yes, I think everything is harder on your body as you get older, no question about that. Anyways, you are on the right track trying to start a sober life and there is lots of support here.

Welcome I drank and used from an early age, I was abused and pled with drink.....I am not using this as an excuse, maybe a reason to keep myself numb. I drank and used for more years than I can remember finally I had had enough, it's the best thing I did and I got to know myself intothe bargain!.All the years of feeling worthless and abusing my body have taken their toll and yes I do think it gets harder as it progresses. I'm glad you want to be sober I don't think that you'll regret it. indigo

I was about your age when I began blacking out and being seen as a "problem drinker" Unfortunately it took another 5 years for me to stop killing myself with booze and stop torturing my husband and friends with my drunken behavior. I suggest going to your doctor because alcohol detox can be dangerous. Anna is absolutely right on about booze and getting older... My hangovers became absolutely suicidal. It will only get worse for you as well. Stick around and let us know how you're doing?
