| A trip to Las Vegas
I wanted to get some opinions on a trip to Las Vegas. My husband will be 90 days sober when we have a trip scheduled to Vegas. We will be attending a birthday party, going on a golf outing and seeing a show. I realize this will be hard for him, do you think we should cancel. He thinks it will be ok, but wants to go to meetings during our 2 day trip. Does anyone know of meetings on the strip? We are not big gamblers but I know that alcohol is everywhere in that town, but it is also everywhere here! Please give me your opinions!!! Thanks |

Hi there! Congratulations to you and your husband for his sober days! Temptation is a fact. It's how we're prepared inside for it that matters I think. Here's a link to AA Vegas. http://www.lvcentraloffice.org/ I don't know why, but I'm willing to bet, no pun intended, that there are meetings on the Strip. A quick phone call to the central office number listed and you'll find out. Best of luck to you both. |

Hey there L&A Las Vegas has _great_ meetings. Some of the big casinos right on the strip have meetings, see the link that Dan posted. So ya'll can stay indoors, have a good time and still go to meetings. Mike :-)

Just wanted to give you an update, no meetings on the Las Vegas Strip on Friday or Saturday nights. They do have meetings in Las Vegas just not on the strip. Bummer.... Don't know if we should go, what do you think? |

I had 5 months in AA when I went to Vegas. I brought my books to be on the safe side. I never made a meeting there. I made a meeting before I left and after I got back. Are you going to be with him most of the time? Anyone asks your hubby why he's not drinking all he has to do is say health reasons. http://www.menshealth.com/cda/artic...-0-2122,00.html I hope, you can open this link up. It tells of the health related problems that occur from abusing alcohol. No matter where you are, no matter where you go alcohol is around. I've been to Vegas twice since I've been sober. If, I can go there and stay sober your husband can to Chris

I just got back from the largest casino on earth, Foxwoods in CT, and there are few places where I feel as "drunk" with the power of sobriety than a casino. I won $600 and I left while I was up, something that would have never happened while i was drinking. which i used to do in casinos a lot in the late nineties, till i lost my life savings (4k at that time) one night during what was probably the worst drinking binge i ever went on. even if one is a normal social drinker or whatever, it's best to abstain entirely in casinos. alcohol and gambling is a potentially very dangerous mix. perhaps it would help to view it that way rather than as a sobriety issue? i was in a vip lounge there earlier today with free unlimited alcohol and buffet, but i had a coke and two small fish fillets (i never eat much unless i have several beers in me). now that i am back, i am toying with the thought of getting some beer. but two things are holding me back: the thought of the hangover and the thought of starting from day 1 tomorrow. incidentally the only two things which have made me refrain since jan 16. |

Recovered alcoholics can go anywhere but 90 days sober is far from recovered. What I would do if I only had 90 days, would be to go to a AA meeting before going to any casinos and ask for some local advice. If the locals think it is too risky, ask em if anyone there would be willing to be a sober escort?
