"You Kill Me" about an alcoholic hitman for a mobb family in Buffalo that moves to San Francisco to clean up, tells everyone in meetings he's a hitman and lies about nothing, very interesting twist on a movie.

The one that inspire me all the time is "The Lost weekend"
Ray Milland played a great role and the movie has a motivational speech against alcoholism at the end which helped people like us to wake up and change their lives.

The only serious role I've seen Ben Stiller in.'
Crazy Heart....Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal ....Robert Duvall (I see it was already mentioned)..I saw this in the theater...SO WORTH IT.
The House of Sand and Fog is not so much a recovery movie as a relapse movie, and it is gruesome. But good!
The book is even better.
I hope you aren't scared off from them, because both are truly enjoyable, in the sense that truly honest works are enjoyable.

Leaving Las Vegas was excellent because it was brutally honest about addiction!! How about Basketball Diaries"--WOW.
Another film that I couldn't get out of treatment without seeing was "Chalk Talk" by Father Martin. "Nil By Mouth" was directed by Gary Oldham; was suppose to be autobiographical, another good one.

Several weeks ago I stumbled upon the SR forum while searching for movies about recovery/addiction. SO glad I did!
Many of the movies suggested in this thread are sitting in my queue now with Netflix.
I watched "The Panic in Needle Park" a couple of days ago. Of the movies I've watched so far, this has got to be my favorite. It's old (1971), but so am I. The acting of a young Al Pacino is a sight to behold and the female lead was also amazing. This was a powerful movie that depicts the progression of addiction so well. (those eyedropper syringes were carzy!)
Movies I've seen so far with my star ratings (my opinion based on what I'm looking for in an addiction/recovery movie):
My Name is Bill W (*****)
The Panic in Needle Park (*****)
Clean and Sober (****)
28 Days (****)
When a Man Loves a Woman (***)
I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can (**)
Postcards From the Edge (**)
The Basketball Diaries (**)
Wasted (*)
Today, "Never Get Outta The Boat" is arriving. Will watch tonight.
THANK YOU for this thread....it's timeless.
