Why do you Keep Telling Us these Horrendous Stories M-Bob ????

Well, if there was a better forum in which to tell this story it would be called, "What Recovery Is Not." Recovery is not deceiving myself (ourselves) into thinking that we may drink yet again and not suffer as before.

If I may, I will take us back just short of 9 years ago when I met my friend Ben in DUI class. Yes, we were both doing the 18 month drunk driving class together. I had only been sober for a short while but, Ben had been sober for several years but, still had to attend this class so as to get his license back.

Ben and I hit it off well and not only went to class together but, we also attended AA meetings and did an occasional bicycle ride together.

Prox. 5 years ago Ben was looking for a new place to stay and I told him about one of my neighbors here in the country that rented RV spaces. If he could find an RV he would have very cheap rent. He found one and after I talked with my neighbor explaining that Ben was a sober friend of mine, Ben was here living on the old dirt road.

Everything it seemed was going fine until a while back when my neighbor called me and asked, "if I had seen Ben lately ?" I told him no and asked why. "he said that I should check on Ben because he thought that he was not doing good."

Well, I did that today and Ben has been running once again with the Liquid Devil. He lost his job a couple of years ago and spent his 80 thousand dollars from his retirement account just down the hill out back from us at the Indian Casino. His cat was starving and he hadn't eaten in a while and both of his cars had been towed away. This is the last place that one would wish to be stranded because, it is a 5 mile walk down the hill to the small city of Lakeside.

I took him a bag of cat food and a small bag of food for himself. This all saddens me much, but then again -- what can I do. Ben jumped out of the sober boat and right into the waters of the Liquid Devil.

So why do I share sad stories such as this ?? By the grace of God there go I (or possibly you.) We need to always be on guard, remembering that if the drink calls yet again, for us it is like the Hot Stove that will burn us just like before or possible even worse........

A nice sober day wished for all,
Bob

That is sad, Mountainmanbob. All that money gone, and the poor kitty! And your friend. What will happen next, do you think?

Sorry to hear about Ben, that was nice of you to provide him and his cat with something to eat. I hope he finds his way back.

I am so sorry for your friend and for his cat.

Yes, there but for the Grace of God go we.

Vigilance, an acute awareness of my psychological and emotional health, and a constant appreciation of the goodness of sobriety, must all remain staples of my recovery.

He's like in the twilight zone. He mentioned that he had thought about suicide. I told him that would not be a good idea.

This all came as new news to me today I'm still processing it all.

I'm really not sure what to do.

Thank you for bringing cat food. I wonder if he would be up to going to a meeting with you.

IF he's hit bottom, and now TRULY knows he DOESN'T NEED POISON BOOZE . . . now's the time for help!

I'd also make sure he'll take ANTABUSE!

Now I'd like to spend hours hearing what he's learned... Can he write here?

What happened?

I'd love to live in the natural Lakeside pine forests; hiking, biking, boating, fishing, working. . .

Could he start bike riding into town? ... Even 10 mile walks may do him good.

Dang!

.

.

Hi Done4
Ben has not returned calls but, his landlord did say he had gotten a job up north of here. Apparently at least he is back to work.

I know many don't like the 'war stories', but I have to admit that hearing them from folks who are now working a solid plan of recovery gives me hope that someday--my stepson will reach for recovery as well.

Thanks, Bob.

That's good news. Was going to offer to take him some food. My parents live in Santee, so would be an easy drive by.
