My ex-boyfriend was a recovering addict, and although he was NOT a huge John Mayer fan, I am. One day in my car, I had one of my favorite songs blaring...for once, he wanted to hear it again and again. When I looked over his eyes were closed and his head was back. I got it. I think Mayer wrote the song about love, but I think it can apply to anything...especially recovery.
I bold printed his favorite parts.

In Repair - John Mayer

Too many shadows in my room
Too many hours in this midnight
Too many corners in my mind
So much to do to set my heart right
Oh it's taking so long i could be wrong, i could be ready
Oh but if i take my heart's advice
I should assume it's still unsteady
I am in repair, i am in repair

Stood on the corner for a while
To wait for the wind to blow down on me
Hoping it takes with it my old ways

And brings some brand new luck upon me
Oh it's taking so long i could be wrong, i could be ready
Oh but if i take my heart's advice
I should assume it's still unsteady
I am in repair, i am in repair

And now i'm walking in a park
All of the birds they dance below me
Maybe when things turn green again
It will be good to say you know me

Oh it's taking so long i could be wrong, i could be ready
Oh but if i take my heart's advice
I should assume it's still unready
Oh i'm never really ready, i'm never really ready
I'm in repair, i'm not together but i'm getting there
I'm in repair, i'm not together but i'm getting there

I love so many songs that have been posted here. Thanks all who shared!

Here are some country songs I haven't seen listed yet. I think someone else posted songs by Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban, so I won't repeat those. And Carrie Underwood's "Wasted" is obvious.

Rascal Flatts - "I'm Movin' On":
I've dealt with my ghosts and I've faced all my demons
Finally content with a past I regret
I've found you find strength in your moments of weakness
For once I'm at peace with myself

Faith Hill - "If You're Gonna Fly Away"
You had all these dreams
But your small town, they killed them for you
You had nothing else to do
But to use and use and use and use

Tim McGraw - "Angel Boy"
I found a priest, I spoke my mind
Asked if I'd sinned one too many times
He said "My son, you're only a man"
Then I said, "Sir, you don't understand"

Hi sandbox,
Good thread! How about "Mr. Brownstone" by Guns n Roses, "There She Goes" by the La's, "Dead Flowers", Rolling Stones. Others that come to mind are "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers, "Heroin, She Said" by Wolfsheim, "The Needle and the Damage Done" Neil Young and Velvet Undergrounds "Heroin"
Hope these have been of some help.
Best Wishes

From the looks of some of these tunes, I can see I have found a home.

Check out Life is Beautiful Bu Nikki Sixx.

You can't quit until you try
You can't live until you die
You can't learn to tell the truth until you learn to lie
You can't breathe until you choke
You gotta laugh when you're the joke? It's nothing like a funeral to make you feel alive

Just open your eyes
Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful
Will you swear on your life that no one will cry at my funeral

I know some things that you don't?I've done things that you won't
It's nothing like a trail of blood to find your way back home
I was waiting for my hearse
What came next was so much worse
It took a funeral to make me feel alive

Just open your eyes
Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful
Will you swear on your life that no one will cry at my funeral

Alive
Just open your eyes
Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful
Will you swear on your life that no one will cry at my funeral

Just open your eyes
Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful
Will you swear on your life that no one will cry at my funeral

Tim McGraw- Ive Got Friends that Do
(This is for the lost junkie
who spends all his hard earned money...on something that he hates)

And I dunno who sings it, but the words are:
I dare you to walk
I dare you to move
Dare you to pick yourself up off the floor.

Somethin' like that.

The Outsider

Help me if you can
It's just that this, this is not the way I'm wired
So could you please,

Help me understand why
You've given in to all these
Reckless dark desires

You're lying to yourself again
Suicidal imbecile
Think about it, put it on the faultline
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this. Why do you wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess. I don't want to watch you.

Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die

Medicated, drama queen, picture perfect, numb belligerence
Narcissistic, drama queen, craving fame and all its decadence

Lying through your teeth again
Suicidal imbecile
Think about it, put it on the fautline
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Go with this, why do you wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess, I don't wanna watch you...

Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die

They were right about you
They were right about you

Lying to my face again
Suicidal imbecile
Think about it put it on the fautline
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this, why do you wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess, Coalesce, Coalesce

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet at a time
What's your hurry, everyone will have his day to die
If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere,
Do it somewhere far away from here

Name of the band is "A Perfect Circle"

Name of the cd, you have to love it, "The 13th Step"

Sweet Surrender by John Denver

Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Travelled by many remembered by few
Looking for something that I can believe in
Looking for something that I'd like to do with my life

Theres nothing behind me and nothing that ties me
To something that might have been true yesterday
Tomorrow is open and right now it seems to be more
Than enough to just be there today

And I dont know what the future is holding in store
I dont know where Im going, Im not sure where Ive been
There's a spirit that guides me, a light that shines for me
My life is worth the living, I dont need to see the end

Sweet, sweet surrender
Live, live without care
Like a fish in the water
Like a bird in the air

yo folks ..
new to the site ..
thought id share this with ya ' ..by Ben Harper .
(check him out ...he has helped me hold on tight thru some rough times ..
"Better Way"
I'm a living sunset
Lightning in my bones
Push me to the edge
But my will is stone

Fools will be fools
And wise will be wise
But i will look this world
Straight in the eyes

What good is a man
Who won't take a stand
What good is a cynic
With no better plan

Reality is sharp
It cuts at me like a knife
Everyone i know
Is in the fight of their life

Take your face out of your hands
And clear your eyes
You have a right to your dreams
And don't be denied

I believe in a better way
..
peace & blessings
A.

Pink-Who Knew

She decided she didn't want drugs to be part of her life, but she had a lot of friends who still used. This one was about a friend of hers who OD'd, I believe.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Jane Says" by Jane's Addiction. The haunting line of "I'm gonna kick tomorrow" just sums up addiction, any addiction, for me.

I've also always liked "The Piano Has Been Drinking" by Tom Waits. It's humorous, but like many of his songs, there's a sadness underneath the humor.

I'd also like to share the lyrics of a positive song by the late Elliott Smith. Too bad he never was able to kick his addiction and depression (RIP).

Independence Day

Future butterfly gonna spend the day higher than high
You'll be beautiful confusion
Oh once I was you

I saw you caught between all the people out making the scene
And a bright ideal tomorrow
Oh don't go too far
Stay who you are

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
You only live a day
But it's brilliant anyway

I saw you in a perfect place
It's gonna happen soon but not today
So go to sleep and make the change
I'll meet you here tomorrow

Independence day
Independence day
Independence day

Depeche Mode -- Clean -- Listen to this song -- best song I have heard on recovery
....Clean, the cleanest I've been
....Been through all the tears and the in-between years, now I'm clean
....the cleanest I've been
....I don't understand what destinys planned, I just know what I like and I'm starting to grow, now I'm clean
