| Any scuba divers?...UK or beyond
In sobriety i have took up scuba diving, something i wanted to do since childhood. I am in a scuba diving club in the Midlands, i enjoy diving with some of them, but others do drink. I have been thinking of going on one or two trips in the summer, but it has been said that they have a drink on the last night of the trip, when there is no diving in the morning so it kind of worries me a bit. I wondered if there are any divers here that may consider a UK dive in the summer? Paul |

Hey Paul, never noticed this thread! I learned to dive in sobriety too but never really got into it - long story, but my (experienced diver) wife's brain surgery left her with a compromised skull, so she can't dive so I didn't really follow through after completing the training. I'd kinda like to do some less than 10 metre dives somewhere scenic though... I liked Capenwray, where I did my open water stuff. You still keeping it up? And yeah, I hear they drink - what of it. If they're not alkies they can drink, good luck to them!

Hi Paul, just noticed your response. I did my final qualifying dive in capernwray, got some photos of me feeding the trout somewhere. I haven't done many dives this year in all honesty, but planning to go to dosthill, near Tamworth on Sunday. I haven't as much a big deal with the people drinking around me now that i'm close to 12 months sober. That said i am reluctant to go on hols with some in the club as trips can turn into booze ups too. Are you padi or bsac? and have you dived recently? Paul

padi - and I haven't dived since I completed the training! As I say the plan was to dive with the wife - part of that whole making amends and "living differently" thing. But after she recovered from her brain surgery, turned out that she couldn't go any lower than 1 atmosphere because she had part of her skull removed and replaced with titanium mesh. And while I completed all that dive training, I found some of it bordered on the wrong side of "exhilerating"! I'm thinking as I write this though that I wouldn't mind having another go - maybe when the finances are a bit more stable! You done any "proper" dives, like in the sea? Or sticking to dive centres? Capenwray is brillaint - I can't believe the've got so much stuff there - helicopters and fairground rides and ships - there's supposed to be a huge sturgeon too isn't there?

I haven't done any sea dives yet. But i'm booked to go to the Farne Islands in August for a weekend, 12 of us have booked a boat for the weekend. There's a seal colony there that play with the divers that i'm looking forward to. I've sat on the fairground horse in Capernwray, it was fun. I've heard of the sturgeon but didn't see it, some out of the club went up there yesterday actually.

Is that you in your avatar too? You're well into water sports if it is! There's a dive centre near me - the Delph Centre? You ever dived that one? It's about five miles away from my house. I've never done it, I have a neighbour who got into diving in his sixities(!), he says it's a bit creepy!

Hi Paul, yes that is me in the avatar, it's at Edgbaston reservoir in Birmingham. I only windsurfed the once, it was easier than i thought to get the balance. I have never done the Delph, some in the club have though. I'm going to get into snorkelling over the next few weeks, a couple of divers snorkelled Capernwray last weekend in the sunshine and said it was fantastic, they managed to get down to 6m. Paul
