Any Parrot Owners Out There?

I've got two . . . . a mini macaw and a cockatiel. Anyone else?

We have two, an african grey named Charlie who is a total riot and a big green one (no clue what type) that we inherited when my Grandma passed away. Her name is Bigfoot, she is almost as old as I am (and may be my age - I am 43!) and mean as a snake! She bit the crap out of my mom yesterday and it's still bleeding!

Bigfoot mainly squawks but says a few words but Charlie talks his head off and you know exactly where he learned whatever it is he is saying because he uses the person's voice. It is quite comical to hear my mom's voice, my kids voices, my own. He also calls the dogs, makes back up alarm noises, car alarm noises, running water noises, tells us goodnight and he loves us. But he is another one that is not easy to handle.

YAY!! I am soo happy someone started a user-group on one of my favorite topics!!

I have a Double Yellow Headed Amazon named "Mikko" who is just turned 9-months old! He is still a baby but right about at the "toddler age", into everything and needs to be kept occupied constantly or he gets annoyed! LOL!
Here is a pic of him shredding a tissue while we were trying to watch a football game one afternoon....

My Sammy-bird and best friend who was a Panama Amazon and was about 35-years old just passed away in February of this year from an illness and I went through an awful emotional time!

I would love to see some pics of other's parrots!!

Wow Jane Mikko is beautiful!

My birds are hard to handle also Kellye...my fault...after a few bad bites I backed off...

Tino talks like mad...he mimics the laugh tracks from TV at night it's quite amusing.

Wish I wasn't afraid to get bit....lol

Thank you bugsworth! I also forgot to mention we have a 10-yr old Cockatiel named "Spikey"! He is mainly my daughter's bird who stays here with us while she is away at college.

I don't blame you for not wanting to get bit...especially by an Amazon who can deliver quite a painful bite if given the chance!
If you don't mind me asking, how old is your bird and has he/she always been a biter?
There are lots of things you can do to train them but it takes time and patience! I usually start with the basics such as stick training them to "step up" until they are able to be handled. You might still get a bite every now and then but there are also ways around that such as giving them a gentle "shake" so that they loose their balance or distracting them with a treat or toy, all the while telling them "No!" in a stern voice.
Here is a great site with lots of tips on how to train them...
Winged Wisdom Pet Bird Magazine - OUCH !! Bird Bites
At the very bottom there is a link for "Articles Listed By Topic" if you want to read more!

I am still working with Mikko too as he is still quite young and full of himself! LOL! Sammy, my Amazon that passed away, was the most gentlest, loving bird I have ever owned and would sit for hours preening my eyebrows and eyelashes! I trusted that bird with my life and he was really a special bird!
Take care!
Jane
