IO Storm I think your problems are different than the recent issues we've been having. When I have problems like you have I usually run ccleaner. It cleans out everything you don't need. I've never had a problem with it removing anything I needed, but read what it's going to remove before clicking the clean button. CCleaner - Download Then you should reinstall java. I have to do that every so often when I can't access some of the forum features. java.com: Java + You After that reboot your computer and see what happens.

MG, I thought Java was only for chat... what else is Java for? I keep ignoring Java updates cause I don't "do" chat. Is Java essential for forums too? I'm an ignoramus, I admit. Only had a computer since '04 so I'm still a tantrum-throwing toddler, computer-wise...

I am not a tech and not really qualified to answer your questions least because I really don't know. The forums use Ajax. Ajax is a way of developing Web applications that combines: XHTML and CSS standards based presentation Interaction with the page through the DOM Data interchange with XML and XSLT Asynchronous data retrieval with XMLHttpRequest JavaScript to tie it all together The thank you button uses ajax. If the thank you button doesn't work it may help to reinstall java. I've had problems numerous times when links won't click, the thank you button doesn't work, the images disappear etc... The first thing I do is use ccleaner. Then I reboot my computer. That usually fixes the problems. If I can't get into chat or things still don't work I will reinstall java. That usually fixes everything. Deleting cookies can be a hassle because you lose all your saved passwords and have to start all over again, but old cookies often cause a conflict and things won't work. ccleaner takes care of everything. That is really all I know. If everything is working I don't worry about updating java. The techs are going to work on the other forum issues this weekend. Thank you all for your reports and patience.

Hi all - jumping in here as, for what it's worth, I actually am a techy. (!!!) MG has clearly been helping out here, and absolutely right that the "Thanks" button uses Ajax. However, Ajax does NOT use Java, it uses JavaScript, which is something different. I know... I know!! I didn't make this stuff up though! ![]() Anyway, if the "Thanks" button isn't working, check that JavaScript is enabled in your browser, or if the worst comes to the worst, uninstall and reinstall your browser. Chat here on SR does use Java, so if that's the problem then reinstalling Java could help. If anyone has any specific problems, I'm more than happy to try and help out. I've been an IT consultant for nearly as long as I was drinking... |

Yoo Hoo! Guess What? I tried something different. lol I deleted Mozilla Firefox, actually all browswers..and reinstalled Windows Explorer. Voila'. My SR is back in full form. I have no why..most likely Windows is blocking some of Firefox's images?

I had to revert to using IE today, which I detest. I can't do anything with Firefox except access the main page to the forums. Guess I'll have IE open just for SR!

What's up with this site? The pages take forever to load. I don't know if one of my private messages got sent or not because it goes to the "Internet explorer cannot display this webpage" page. A pain in the you-know-what and very annoying and not too user friendly as of late. I don't have time to sit and wait for pages to load. Reminds me of the old dial-up days. |

| Online Meeting PC Security
From a PC infection standpoint how risky is it to use the online meeting/chat section on this forum. I am not referring to the risks of divulging personal information, predators, type issues. I am concerned about things like code injection, malware, pc being taken over, etc. Should I assume that use of the online meeting/chat section on this forum are as risky as other online chat sites. Normally I would consider this to be in the high risk category and not utilize the resources here. Is there a warm fuzzy anyone can give me on this. I do run good security products that are updated frequently and multifaceted security scans weekly. Thanks! |

Dime, I emailed the chat host and I'll post their answer here when I get it.

Here is their reply The addonchat software itself is very secure in this respect, and infection in this sense would be rare. There is no difference if the chat room is hosted on its own or as part of a forum. All you can advise in this sense is that every step is taken to ensure the software remains safe.
