Snorting xanax

Hello all. I am on these boards because of my AH.or soon-to-be exH (he left our family and marriage of 27y to "have fun",etc,etc translate that:keep drinking,etc).

New wrinkle: 18y daughter's bf (and most likely her ) evidently is snorting xanax;probably selling it,too. That is a whole other story....one I am trying to let his own family deal with in their way.

My question is: is that what the anger,temper and mood swings comes from? (Seems like the chance of violence is also there.) I have taken "crumbs" of xanax years ago as needed (ie. when I was having anxiety attacks and flying) and it mellowed me out, so I am assuming that the opposite reaction occurs when they leave your system...or is that only after long-term use.

I am unfamiliar with this as an abused drug (even though I know it doesn't really matter except for my own knowledge). I am assuming that the biggest worry is that they are still breathing, adding alcohol and driving

UGH...the family gift that just keeps on giving.

well, i have never heard of snorting xanax but i have seen everything else snorted so this doesn't surprise me. yes, mood swings come with xanax. it's a given. anytime your body doesn't have what it is craving or needing you are going to have anger and mood swings. there could be something more going on but snorting xanax is not going to help anything. when i detoxed from anything i lost control pretty much of my emotions.

Mood swings can be SO DRAMATIC for some people in regards to Xanax that I can literally tell when one of my girlfriends has used it recently... not high on it. She turns into a total witch for about three days after using it. So hateful. I ask her 'ate some xanax have ya'? and I always get a yes when she is acting like that.

I think the more 'level' you are... the worse that side effect is. It seems to make peoples brains angry if they dont need the medicine.

Otherwise, she is always happy-go-lucky, laid back, sweet and really quiet. Sweet girl that can turn vicious.

Pretty much ditto to what these girls said. From what I know it puts you into such a state of relaxation that when that's about to go away your body can go into flight mode and not want to get back to 'normal' and so mood swings occur.

Snorting it can of course make it worse. I hope your daughter gets off this stuff!~

Snorting xanax is DANGEROUS as hell. I hope your daughter gets rid of this guy, sounds like a putz.

Thanks for your input.......all you said sounds right. Of course they all "know" better....but each of them has an alcoholic (etc.?) father and probably then some...so you know the genetics of it all.

Gotta be honest. I take xanax, as perscribed by my doctor, actually I take less than perscribed, but when I saw the title of this thread a little voice in my head said, "Hmmm snorting xanax, never though of that. I wonder what that is like?" Pot was my DOC and I've never snorted anything in my life, but it just goes to show it's not the drug we chase, but the buzz. BTW I told that little voice to shut the *uck up!! Guess it's been 20 days clean...but I don't count days!!!!

I take 2 5 mg. xanax a day and have done so for a year now! Never heard of snorting it. But what their doing is dangerous anytime you take xanax,valium or any other mood altering chemical it's dangerous. Because whether you realize it or not here is what happens.1 oz. of alcohol taken with a 5 mg. xanax will turn into a 75 mg. xanax. thats right take the 5 mg. xanax and multiply it by 15 thats why many people overdose. I was an emergency medical technician for 8 years and saw a little bit of everything!

YIKES!!! (I knew it was more than just double the effect, but 15x?!)

Tyler.......great about the 20 days! and also for not listening to that "devious little voice";but thank you for mentioning how that operates...........I've heard it a few times before myself. THAT gets me to thinking, but that is another post or two.

Do you mean .5? They come in .5 mg., 1 mg., and 2 mg. 5 mg twice a day seems really high (no pun intended ).

Me too Ty, me too. Pretty sad. My long-time psychiatrist prescribes it to me with no problem, but because I have no insurance right now and can't afford to pay him out-of-pocket, I've been acquiring the extended-release illegally (trading SO's Tylenol 3's for it). I don't like the extended release, because I don't get that instant euphoria after 20 minutes of ingesting, so yeah, I was a bit captured by the title too. I'm a bit too timid to snort it though. Not that I have virgin nostrils of course....

Pick-a-Name: I hope your daughter isn't snorting this stuff. I'd watch for nosebleeds or evidence of such. Some people take Xanax with no behavior disturbances whatsoever, and then there's horror stories of those who do. Sorry you're going through this, and best of luck.

Im a drug addict. Any drug addict who messes with xanax will tell you that snorting them is the best by far. I just got done railing 3. I hope you guys don't go down the road I'm on. I'm literally stuck

Xanax is HIGHLY addictive. It's in that family of benzodiazepines (or "benzos"). The withdrawal protocol for benzos is probably the most uncomfortable and takes the longest - though not quite so life threatening as alcohol/opiates.

Coming down off benzos turns you into a walking nerve ending.

I agree with you about the addiction. Since I hang around with many drug users I have been told from a recovering heroin user that said the withdrawal from xanax is worse that heroin.

I was prescribed xanax before and it did absolutley nothing to me, so my doc put me on valium, which i like a lot better since i have real bad social anxiety... but anyways back to he xanax... I've never heard of snorting those eiher, theres a bunch of fillers in it so i'm sure it would hurt like hell. I used to crush mine up, like 4 at a time and eat them because they were ER... and I've snorted a lot of things and never once thought of snorting xanax.

I've tried snorting and shooting just about every drug you can name. From an addict's point of view (i.e. getting high) sometimes there's a point to it but usually you get no more of a buzz than if you just eat the damn stuff. Xanax is one of those drugs where if you're going to abuse it, you might as well just eat it. But the mere fact that she's snorting it means that she is hell-bent on abusing it as much as possible any way she can think of, whether or not if even works.

snorting drugs is harder to hide than eating drugs... I just got over snorting 20 pills a day, and my nose is wrote off... First you develop a case of the sniffles.. Than your nose starts producing tons of fluid to try and deal with the crap yoru putting up it.. than your nose turns red and chaffed becuase you are rubbing it 24/7.. than you wake up in the middle of the night and you can't breathe your so stuffed up, so you have to snort more pills to sort of clear it out. So if you want to know if she is snorting them, than just listen to her breathe, or look at her nose, is it red? puffy? crap coming out of it? Honestly it's a horrible horrible way to do drugs, and it takes so so long to get over it, and to make it heal.
