I happened to be wide awake last night for the show on A&E called "Intervention" {the one we have discussed here before} and it was about a housewife who was a Vicoden addict and who also had a nasty gambling habit. Anyone else happen to catch it?? It made me sort of depressed but I couldn't stop watching for some reason...everything was so "familiar" except for the gambling habit of course. She was counting out Vicodens and making sure she had some waiting for her to take the next morning and didn't feel normal until they were in her system. I was watching "Will And Grace" tonight also and Will hurt his foot and came home from the ER plastered on Painkillers...and then proceeded to turn into a zombie the next 3-4 days and become addicted to them in which Grace had a sort of little intervention for him and he finally threw the pills away. Seems drugs are all over the TV anymore these days. It is really becoming such a problem in our society and I am glad I stopped! |

Jane, Oh I watched that last night. I am very drawn to that show. I had seen that episode before, and I watched it again last night. The show is always very REAL, they don't hide anything. It shows the reality of how addiction sucks, and how we take ourselves, and everyone we can down with us. I also related to her, BUT what really got me was when she was sticking some pills in her purse and soem in her pocket, incase something happened to her purse, and in th closet in folded soks, all over the place!! Wow, that was me. I was SO paranoid that something might happen to my pills that I'd have a certain amount in alot of different places, just incase.. They say that pain killers are the fastest growing drug problem, and it's so obvious why.. SOME doctors hand them out like candy, then wonder how could we possibly have a problem, and they are easy to buy via the net, and lots of other places. But the biggest reason I believe is, when you do most drugs or drink, you can see that peopel are loaded, or smell it, or whatever, but with pain killers you can;t see a person acting different, UNTIL it had really gotten out of control. So it is easy to yuse, without getting caught. I was NEVER scared at work, because I didn't look like I was high. But then once they knew I had a problem, wow, I was scared then. It is all so sad. I hope doctors become more aware. Love ya, Becky

Yep, that was me too ...I had little hiding places all over the house...but the one I remember the most was in my desk drawer so that I wouldn't have to dig around in the bedroom and wake the hubby late at night. Yukk! Man, that is sooo sick!I also remember taking a bottled water with me to the pharmacy and waiting until I got a block or so away, then pulling over to take a couple Vicoden...once I did it in a church parking lot. {ugg} I knew they had cameras outside the pharmacy and I was so parinoid, but just "had" to get some in my system so that I would feel OK by the time I pulled into my driveway. I could relate to the worry that someone might steal my purse too...and not about my credit cards either...that they would get my couple of lousy Vics I had stashed in there! I think that is why I have some trouble watching that show is because it is all so real and I see alot of myself and things I did. I agree though, it is hard not to look...I guess because we can relate so well. I think Painkillers are already the most abused drug! People start taking them for legit reasons and then they have a habit before they know it! I wish doctors would explain the side effects better to people and how much of a danger they are...course, I knew they were addictive and I still kept taking them and finding excuses to get them...I dunno, I guess once the addiction is set in, you have to hit your own version of "rock bottom" to realise you need help. The woman's husband on that show made about $100,000 a year and they were struggling to get by! They estimated she had spent about $15,000 in a years time on gambling {Bingo, Horse racing , etc} and another $10,000 alone just for the Vicoden! Heart wrenching!!! |

I watch it every week too. It's like looking into a mirror revealing the BS that we all tell ourselves when we deny our problems. Addicts spend so much time living in their own heads that the first victim of addiction is perspective. It's painful but not as painful as watching it during or after doing drugs. Liam |
