Chantix for opiates and what it did for me

I have been trying to taper off, cold turkey my vicodin dependence for almost 6 months. I am prescribed the same amount that I take so I didn't feel it was a horrible problem. I just wanted to get off. I was also a smoker and tried chantix to quit smoking. Little did I know what good would come of it.

Within 3 days of taking the full dose I was able to stop taking opiates all together with little to no withdrawal. It has been 3 weeks now. With no withdrawal or problems besides the ridiculous dreams. I know there is a lot of hype about how chantix is dangerous. But if you are able, and your doctor approves. This may work for other people like it did me.

I have looked online for studies, forums, doctor posts. There are none about anyone trying it for opiates. There is a study in progress but still no results yet. The FDA has only approved the use of chantix for smoking as of now.

I am only here to tell people about how I did it. And to maybe ease some of the lighter users of hydrocodone or opiates withdrawal stress. I took a maximum of 50mg of hydrocodone per day

There are some studies on progress about it. I tried Chantix to stop smoking and was suprised because the craving of alcohol (I am alcoholic) decreased materially. I was 15 days sober and then relapsed. Now I am 80 days sober (without Chantix).

I have heard mixed things about it working for alcoholism as well. Chantix did nothing for my brother in law as far as drinking went. He attends AA now and has been clean a little over 6 months.

Congratulations on reaching 80 days.

Thank you.

I'm just trying to see if my success with it can help other people.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to tell anyone to go out and get it. Just how I did it.

I remember forever trying to find an easier way outside of a clinic and I wanted to share my experience. Sorry about that

Chantix worked for me to stop smoking. I haven't smoked since September 1st. I've been sober since December 2007. chantix had some gnarly effects though. The dreams were pretty crazy and the agitation was nasty for me.

Love,

lenina

My husband and I used Chantix to stop the Nicotene Replacement Therapy (gum and lozenges) we used to quit smoking. It worked GREAT for me and not at all for my husband. Eventually, we both quit (almost 5 years!)

I used it to help with cravings for the hydros, too. I figured it was the placebo effect, but after seeing this...

Certainly, it might be worth folks talking to their doctor about it.

Chantix-

This drug has helped me for the last several days. i started it 2 days before my opiates (pills) ran out. I haven't had any withdrawals. Tomorrow will be day 3 so we will see what happens.

Worked for me

Well I have just taken my last opiate on Saturday. Had my second and hopefully last back surgery 31 days ago. At that time I was on 50 mcg/hr fentanyl and 30 mg of oxycododine (18 months) Within 10 days of the second surgery I stopped the pills and started the tapering off the patches 50 to 37, 25, 12 and now nothing. I have been on chantix since starting and can say that it helps considerably to reduce the withdraws and cravings. Now my question is how long should I continue to take the chantex before stopping?

Hi and welcome VWShawn :)

Under our rules we can't give you medical advice here.
It sounds like a great question to ask your Dr :)
