Hydrocodone detox insomnia

Hey guys, I have a quick question.

Right now I'm just rounding the 100 hour mark from my last dose of hydrocodone. The worst is definitely behind me. The only thing I'm dealing with now is alittle bit of leg pain, but it's not restless legs, it's just a sore feeling.

Over the past three nights I've probably gotten a total of 6 or 7 hours of sleep. I was just wondering how long the insomnia lasts. It's annoying not being able to fall asleep, and it makes the days feel so long.

My past couple of days I've been reading all of the posts on here and you guys helped give me the strength to get through the worst part of this journey, and for that I sincerely thank you!

I remember when I was in rehab; the director of the program was talking to me about sleep. He said he sees the most problems with sleep with the patients coming off opiates. There is also something called PAWS that you may be experiencing; common with people coming off opiates as well.

Have you talked about any nonaddictive meds you can take for sleep? There are a lot. Also eat right, excerise, take care of yourself.

After I got out of rehab I was on seroquel for sleep and it really helped..

Good Luck to you. When your body is tired enough you will sleep.

Thanks Liz,

Before detox, I picked up some vitamins and melatonin. I tried taking the melatonin on the second night but it ended up giving me "crawly skin" so I'm unsure whether that was just a result of the detox itself or the melatonin. I think I might try it again tonight if I can't fall asleep on my own.

Hello Tool, Welcome to SR and I'm glad reading the posts here have helped you while your working on getting clean. I too was a Vicodin addict for years. My legs ached when I stopped using too. Take ibuprofen, or tylenol if your in need of relief. You would be surprised how it really does work. When we are on hydrocodone nothing works except that opiate.

As far as the sleep goes, you can try chamomile tea, valerian root, or melatonin. These things are available in the health food store, and chamomile is available in the supermarket. I added lemon and honey, because I didn't like the taste much. The tea helped me sleep, and I hope it works for you too. Everyone is different. The valerian root and melatonin are natural and safe sleep aids. But be careful using them, and don't take them with other meds unless it's safe. I hope this helps you in some way.

Tool311, I actually saw my doctor today and asked him about "sleep" He is a great dr. The best pdoc I have ever seen.

Sleep is a "little" tough for me too right now because I am coming off an 80mg daily amphetamine/adderall habit.

I still take my seroquel. Although it takes about 2hrs to kick in I do get a full nights sleep USUALLY. There is also Trazadone and remeron which help for sleep. There are a lot but I don't know if you want to go down that presription med for sleep road. Lot's of people don't.

My doc told me it was going to take me at least 6mos to feel myself again from the amphetamines. Hopefully it will be shorter for you.

Good Luck

I started my first day today without any vicodin

I bought some Tylenol PM to take at night. I take it about 1/2 an hour before I want to go to bed. I've been doing this for about a week while weaning myself off the vic.

In the morning, I take Motrin 800. I am sure I will be needing to take it every 6 hours or so to get thru the pain. I am still achy right now after taking the Motrin about an hour ago...

Also remember to keep yourself really hydrated! Lots of water and juice. I stocked up on vitamin water and organic juices yesterday at the grocery store. Hopefully it will help with the diarrhea I have had all morning! Hang in there... we can do this!

I'm up to about five hours a night now, but it takes me forever to fall asleep!!!! I even took three melatonin tonight and I'm still up!!! However I quit smoking six days ago too, maybe that has something to do with it!!!!! SWEET DREAMS!!!! maybe
I don't think we will die from no sleep!!?!?!?!

Hi Tool! I'm on day 8 and i swear the non sleep is almost enough to make me want to use just to be on a normal schedule again but... you will get a new schedule. It will happen, this is all so new for your body. I say excersize as much as you can. I figure if i exhaust my body enough I'll sleep. Right now I take it as pay back for hurting my body so long. Kinda like this is minimal compared to what I went through to have pills in my life. Your body is getting rid of the poison, it's trying to find a new way to function, just let it happen. I say this all sweaty & twitchy so I'm with you!

oh no SEROQUEL is a horrible drug. If you take that for too long it will give you something called "rabbit mouth" which means your mouth does not stop twiching. I would research that.

Hi T...I am on my 7 month off hydros and I can say that it took me a good 2 months before I was sleeping through the night consistently. I had horrible pain in my joints and legs before I started to feel completely normal, I found that exercise really helped me fall asleep faster as well as drinking lots of water and tea. Tylenol PM works but I would be careful that you don't become dependent on it in the long run. Keep pushing through it gets alot better : )

I detoxed off of Methadone back in the beginning of May and insomnia was the worst. It took me acouple weeks to finally start sleeping again. Melatonin and Valertian Root helped a bit, but eventually I was able to stop taking those, now sleep is not an issue (most nights).

Melatonin can also cause some pretty vivid dreams. Some of them I remembered in great detail, but one about the snakes is what did me in. Plus I still woke up acouple times during the night.

But remember during those 2 months it was gradually better : ) As long as you can get passed that initial detox it's all downhill from there in my opinion.

The vivid dreams might have been from your detox; not the Melatonin. I do remember when I was in detox; I didn't have physical symptoms, but did have VERY vivid dreams when I was able to sleep.

Not really. When I stopped using the Melatonin, I noticed they were more like the dreams I was used to, the ones I couldn't remember 5 minutes after waking up.

Oh God, this one was funny. I like the idea of popping pills too. It just feels good going down and then I will wait to for the buzz even though it was a Motrin. Crazy brain.

Hi, I see I am not the only one with Hydrocodone issues here on the site... used to be a big drinker, then in '09 *I think I've said this a few times in the past* I got Vicodin for like a whole year and I got addicted mentally and physically, then a few times in '10 unfortunately... as this is my day 1 off Vicodin-again, it's pathetic how your life just revolves around your next pill... really, that's what it's been like for me lately.
