Anyone have any tattoos that are really meaningful to them in regards to recovery? I have Hope tattooed on my ankle (5 inches X 5 inches) in japanese. I speak japanese so its even more relevant to me. I'm thinking of getting 6 more Kanji down my spine (minus the english explanation of course http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/4033/tattoona6.png

Oh that sounds cool! I want to do that someday also. I just got my boys on my arm, it is two babies, they look like boys, and on top of the babies are their names. Now I have to figure something out for logie! And on my lower back, I got a winking smilie face cuz I love smiles. Prob later on in my recovery or maybe when I am 1 yr clean I'll get one. Thanks for bringing it up, cuz now I have something in a way to look forward too!

Wow!! Tanya! Japanese is an extremely hard language to learn! You should be so proud of that acomplishment!! I was never one for permanent tats either but our daughter may be getting one next year on her 21st {don't know how we've kept her from getting one this long...especially her first year in college!!! LOL!} and hubby and I "might" get matching ones then too! It is something our daughter designed herself and it's a small heart {our last name} with a three intertwined in it...signifying the "3-of us"! There's a guy in our town who does a really nice job, very safe and all, but probably will take alot to convince me since I'm such a wuss! LOL! Jane

The fact that I have no tats is really meaningful to my recovery. Friends who have them... many got their tat when out on a binder and never would have gotten one if sober. A couple got their tat just because they like tats but as said...for the most part it was seen as a right of passage while drunk as a skunk for the others. So no tat is very meaningful to my recovery. A full sail clippership that I had seen the guy down the street had on his chest that he had gotten when in the navy in WW2 I always thought was nice but once seeing the cost for such...I never got it *LOL*

| Perhaps she did it on purpose so she could read it in the mirror. The only way she could read it is in the mirror.

No tats here. I think tatoos are nearly the same as cutting.....its a form of self mutilation and it can become addictive....it is not a healthly thing to do. No offense intended to anyone, this is just MHO.

I have two, both pre-recovery. The first is a tiny heart on my behind that I got when I was fourteen. The second is my ex-husband's initials that I did myself when I was nineteen. I won't say where that is. They serve to remind me that some decisions cannot be undone -- and some can, but not without a whole lot of pain. Peace & Love, Sugah

I was thinking of doing that just today, Tanya, so it's cool that you started this thread. I have been considering getting a tattoo for about 10 years now (I once read that if you want a tattoo, pick a design, then wait a year. If you still want the tattoo and still want that design, then get it. If not, find another design and wait another year--you're stuck with it for life, what's one year? they said) but I can't keep with much of anything for very long so I knew it wasn't a good choice. However, I was thinking about getting one on my one year sobriety date, if I can make it that long. A butterfly, to symbolize constant change. And yes, a constant change symbol permanently marked in my skin. The irony does not escape me. |

aducksdelight - For one, you CAN make it to your One year Sobriety Date. Just keep working hard and stay in the right mind set. I got my first tat when I was 16ish and my second when I was 31. It took me that long to decide what to get next. Since my first, I knew I'd get another but I wanted to choose wisely. It is with your for life.

Paperdolls...very pretty tat on your foot!! Thanks for sharing the pic! :-) I have no clue where I would put the little heart tat that hubby, daughter and I might possibly get, but the foot is a good idea! Originally I though of getting it on my back shoulderblade but then I would have to look in the mirror to see it...and I'm kind of shy so anywhere that someone else couldn't see it would be too embarrassing because the fella giving it WOULD BE seeing "it", if ya' know what I mean! {LOL} Definitely something to ponder...;-)
