I have a question I hope someone can answer. I am a nurse in recovery and getting ready to celebrate 9 months clean. I have applied for a nursing job in a detox/addiction inpatient clinic. I was wondering if anyone knows if I have to have a certain amount of clean time to qualify for this job? I have never been convicted of any crime and have a great resume ( I have been working at this particular hospital for over 10 years. I feel my higher power had lead to this journey. Does anyone know the answer? Thanks!

At the facility where I rehab'd, they welcomed folks in recovery and required a year. You might want to check with your facility. Peace & Love, Sugah

You and God know when you are ready for anything that comes along. I would think working as a staff nurse that such a job would be the best as far as staff nurse and risk goes. You would be seeing daily reminders of why you want to stay clean and sober as well as helping others with the added skills of knowing what they may be feeling and thinking. Your Experiences, Strengths, and Hopes will add to your other nursing skills. If you feel you can handle it and continue with your own recovery...Daily...One day at a time and remembering that you can always change if you find the temptation is to strong... You could do well I would think. They would be getting a wonderful skilled nurse that is filled with understanding that others may have no clue about. remember there are other kinds of nursing jobs if you find the temptations feel like they could become a problem. One day at a time.... you will do well.

If you're planning to disclose your personal history, you can ask the detox folks, yes? And if you're not planning on disclosing, I'd reconsider. By the way there is no hard and fast rule about how long one must be sober before being hired in such a place, especially nurses with impaired practice. And it would surprise me greatly that any place woud hire an impaired nurse with six months sobriety...shortage or not. (hiring nurses is part of my job...did so yesterday).

most places i looked into when considering getting my license reinstated did require a year, with a very active recovery program. i guess you were never involved with the board, or their assistance program? i know that when the board finds out, they require two years minimum. just call up and ask them. and i don't know what your addiction was to, but be sure you are safe, wherever you go

It is said, "at least a year before you get into a new relationship". Perhaps you should just wait until at least a year.

There is a years requirement to be clean after being clean. Did you go through a treatment center where this is documented, because if not, then it is your word. That is good but some times people can be PEOPLE as we ALL know and can not beleive us and be mistrustful-to me it is stupid, even if you did go through treatment, you can still be using??? I was very lucky to have a great boss who just believed me. Congrat's on 9 months, that is awesome, just keep it up. I think that you should be honest but not too honest because the state that your liscence is in can pull it if they know that you are working and have been a drug abuser....I live in Missouri and I could not tell anyone except MY boss, the adminstrator, I am a flight trauma nurse-she said they would talk to me and say " we REALLY DON'T THINK IT WOULD BE A "GOOD" idea for you to be flying if you have used. We cannot be sure even with random testing....we just left it alone. YOU are the only person except your HP that needs to know....just go back to work and get back on with your life, don't risk losing something you worked so hard for.....just my opinion...... PEACE, Kahlia
