| Hello All, this is my first post here after reading around the site for several months. I thought that I would share a little part of my story: During my drinking I was pretty well pissed all the time at the end. I was often too pissed to drive and often (to my shame) drove drunk. I would make excuses not to drive my wife and kids anywhere. Sometimes I would drive out to a quiet lane with a bottle of vodka or whiskey, drink it, pass out, wake up, then drive home. I lost my license twice through drink driving - on the last occasion I was almost 4 times over the legal limit - to the amazement of the Police. I spent the night in the cells and was banned for 36 months. I also had 100 hours community service during which I redecorated the inside of the local young persons refuge. When the Police released me from the cell I was so shakey that they could not take my fingerprints properly. I immediately went to the pub for vodka to settle myself after getting out to overcome the jitters. However, today, after entering AA and enjoying 8 months of sobriety my oldest daughter took her Driving Test after being taught by me virtually every day for the last (you guessed it!) 8 months! If I can do it anyone can. My life was hell - now it is good. I still get the urge to drink - but it soon passes after some quiet reflection and use of the Serenity prayer. You just need to read the Big Book and be open to its message. |
