I got off of heroin by first getting into a free program. The program was a 100day methadone program. They started me off at about 20mg daily and it helped, but it was better than nothing, because I didn't have a job and I was living on the streets. So eventually they moved me up to 50mg daily and about halfway through the program I got a job at McDonald's. Since I had a job finally, I decided to go on maintenance because the program I was in was about to start detoxing me off of the methadone. I wasn't quite ready to get off of it. Plus I was having withdrawal symptoms in the mornings throughout the entire program. I used a lot too whenever I could get money, to combat the withdrawal symptoms.
Next, since I had a job and my parents accepted me back into their home, I had a truck and everything. I decided to get on maintenance. I signed up for the methadone maintenance program in my area (about 30 minutes from my house) and am now on 160mg daily. I am still feeling slight withdrawal symptoms in the morning, but I can deal with it. I will be going up on my dose soon anyway. I am very lucky I had the chance that God had given me to survive what I did and get off of heroin. The addiction was hell, but now I feel like a new person.
So that is basically my recovery story in short terms. My name is George by the way, and if anyone feels like they need a guide to getting off of any opiate, I say methadone maintenance is the best way. It is cheap (compared to how much I was spending on illicit drugs on the street weekly); about $80 a week. I feel that it is worth it though. If anyone needs advice on kicking their habit, feel free to contact me through a personal message.
