WE admitted WE were powerless....

I've been listening to some speaker tapes today and hit me the word we in step1.

When i finally realised i had step1 and admitted complete defeat i began to feel as though i belonged in AA. The previous 2 years i always felt a little different, i used to qualify step1 with i'm powerless today (but maybe one day.....you know the rest).

Coming to an AA meeting the very day after my last drink i felt this is home.

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives have become unmanageable

There is no I in there.

"WE" used to really irritate me ......early in recovery.

Over time though, I began to understand that when I read that step, I interpreted WE as you but not me, not really me, anyway.

The information in step 1 had to go from my head to my heart......it had to become real for ME.

It also didn't help that I was soooooo damned manipulative that sometimes when I read "we" I took it to mean "I'll get you to do step 1 for me" so that I won't reeeeally have to do it.

Now, I've come to realize that WE doesn't necessarily mean all of us in AA. Some of our members are still where I was - either because they're new or because they're not able to make that transition from head-knowledge to heart-knowledge.

It's neat how that one simple word has changed so drastically over time.......
