higher power

I am Christian meaning my higher power is God of Christianity and Jesus
But i also want my grandad to be my higher power as well
I loved my grandad he was always there when i was younger always happy and joking never said a bad word about anyone and would help anyone who needed help
He died a few years ago.
Also want my cat that died a few years ago to be my higher power also but maybe it isn't ok to have too many HP's
I dont know if this is possible or not just want some guidance about this please

XWillow..this is not the place to ask for this kind of guidance. Please go to your clergy.

Since this is a "spirituality" forum, I don't think your question is too far off topic. I don't know if you are in recovery or not, but if you are - anything that helps you stay sober is some kind of HP.

I have personally spent countless hours pondering this same question and can't say as I am any closer to knowing the answer today than I was at 5 years old. I have consulted many clergy members about this and can't say as any of them had any special insight about it.

I will share my latest quest to answer this question for what it's worth. The first commandment is normally interpreted as "THOU SHALT NOT HAVE STRANGE GODS BEFORE ME". However, some scholars point out that the Hebrew word used for "STRANGE" can also be translated as "UNFAMILIAR".

In 12 step recovery we use "God as we understand him" or "your own conception of God".
This lends credence to the idea that it is better to have a Gnosis of God or a personal God (Isvara) rather than the "God in a Box" that most religions give us.

This. One of the biggest hurdles people face when starting these steps is a "cluttered" idea of God, or higher power or whatever.

The little sunbeam for Jesus that says I know all about God and you can't tell me anything is on equal footing with the atheist that says there is no God and you can't tell me anything. Both start with preconceptions they cannot let go of. The fewer preconceptions we have the easier it is.

This is a spiritual journey we are embarking on here. Don't decide up front what God is, let God reveal himself to you.

The fewer items we carry on this journey the lighter our is step along the way.

"The Set Aside Prayer

"Dear God, please set aside everything I
think I know about myself, my disease, the
Big Book, the 12 Steps, the Program, the
Fellowship, the people in the fellowship, all
spiritual terms, and especially about you God,
so that I may have an open mind and a new

I have and he did.

The funny thing is "The God of my understanding"...I don't. But I am good with that. All I know is I can feel that higher power.
