scientific prayer ( A little Emmet Fox?)

Get by yourself, and be quiet for a few moments. Do not strain
to think rightly or to find the right thought, but just be quiet. The Bible says "Be still, and know that I am God."

Remind yourself of some of the things that you know about Him. Consider how he is present everywhere, and a part of everything ( even our adversities become fuel for building faith). Read a few verses from any spiritual book that helps you. I find that all the major religions have a common theme, through reading Eastern mystics and chritian theologians I am reminded of the universality of the idea of God that rests in all of us.
During this time of reflection and prayer do not think about your prob-
lem, but to give your attention to God. We do not need try to
solve our problem directly (which would be using will power, directing our thoughts can lead us to confuse our will with His) but rather become interested in thinking of the nature of God. Next claim the thing that you need. Claim it quietly and confidently. Then give thanks for the accomplished fact as you would if somebody handed you a gift. That famous Jewish Carpenter said when you pray, believe that you receive and you shall receive.
Do not discuss your treatment with anyone.

Quiet confidence is a source of strength

Gotta love Emmet Fox! Sermon on the Mount is as important to me as my big book.

The Golden Key

Scientific Prayer will enable you, sooner or later, to get yourself, or anyone else, out of any difficulty on the face of the earth. It is the Golden Key to harmony and happiness.
To those who have no acquaintance with the mightiest power in existence, this may appear to be a rash claim, but it needs only a fair trial to prove that, without a shadow of doubt, it is a just one. You need to take no one's word for it, and you should not. Simply try it for yourself, and see.

God is omnipotent, and man is His image and likeness, and has dominion over all things. This is the inspired teaching, and it is intended to be taken literally, at its face value. Man means every man, and so the ability to draw on this power is not the special perogative of the Mystic or the Saint, as is so often supposed, or even of the highly trained practitioner. Whoever you are, wherever you may be, the Golden Key to harmony is in your hand now. This is because in Scientific Prayer it is God who works, and not you, and so your particular limitations or weaknesses are of no account in the process. You are only the channel through which the Divine action takes place, and your treatment will really be just the getting of yourself out of the way. Beginners often get startling results at the first time of trying, for all that is absolutely essential is to have an open mind, and sufficient faith to try the experiment. Apart from that, you may hold any views on religion, or none.

As for the actual method of working, like all fundamental things, it is simplicity itself. All that you have to do is this: Stop thinking about the difficulty, whatever it is, and thing about God instead. This is the complete rule, and if only you will do this, the trouble, whatever it is, will presently disappear. It makes no difference what kind of trouble it is. It may be a big thing or a little thing; it may concern health, finance, a law-suit, a quarrel, an accident, or anything else conceivable; but whatever it is, just stop thinking about it, and think of God instead - that is all you have to do.

The thing could not be simpler, could it? God Himself could scarcely have made it simpler, and yet it never fails to work when given a fair trial.

Do not try to form a picture of God, which is, of course, impossible. Work by rehearsing anything or everything you know about God. God is Widsom, Truth, inconceivable Love; God is present everywhere; has infinite power; knows everything; and so on. It matter not how well you think you understand these things; go over them repeatedly.
But you must stop thinking of the trouble, whatever it is. The rule is to think about God, and if you are thinking about your difficulty you are not thinking about God. To be continually glancing over your shoulder, as it were, in order to see how matters are progressing, is fatal, because that is thinking of the trouble, and you must think of God, and nothing else. Your object is to drive the thought of the difficulty right out of you consciousness, for a few moments at least, substituting for it the thought of God. This is the crux of the whole thing. If you can become so absorbed in this consideration of the spiritual world that you really forget for a while all about the trouble concerning which you began to pray, you will presently find that you are safely and comfortably out of your difficulty - that your demonstration is made.

In order to "Golden Key" a troublesome person or a difficult situation, think, "Now I am going to 'Golden Key' John, or Mary, or that threatened danger"; then proceed to drive all thought of John, or Mary, or the danger right out of your mind, replacing it by the thought of God.

By working in this way about a person, you are not seeking to influence his conduct in any way, except that you prevent him from injuring or annoy you, and you do him nothing but good. Thereafter he is certain to be in some degree a better, wiser, and more spiritual person just because you have "Golden Keyed" him. A pending law-suit or other difficulty would probably fade out harmlessly without coming to a crisis, justice being done to all parties concerned.

If you find that you can do this very quickly, you may repeat the operation several times a day with intervals between. Be sure, however each time you have done it, that you drop all thought of the matter until the next time. This is important.

We have said that the Golden Key is simple, and so it is, but, of course, it is not always easy to turn. If you are very frightened or worried it may be difficult, at first, to get your thoughts away from material things. But by constantly repeating some statement of absolute Truth that appeals to you, such as There is no power but God, or I am the child of God, filled and surrounded by the perfect peace of God, or God is Love, or God is guiding me now, or, perhaps best and simplest of all, just God is with me - however mechanical or dead it may seem at first - you will soon find that the treatment has begun to "take," and that your mind is clearing. Do not struggle violently; be quiet but insistent. Each time that you find your attention wandering, just switch it straight back to God.

Do not try to think out in advance what the solution of your difficulty will probaby turn out to be. This is technically called "outlining," and will only delay the demonstration. Leave the question of ways and means strictly to God. You want to get out of your difficulty - that is sufficient. You do your half, and God will never fail to do his.
Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

for those that do not know who The Doc is,

DR. EMMET FOX

(1886 - 1951)

His New York City Ministry Touched The World
(1931-1951)

Dr. Emmet Fox was a Minister, Author, Teacher, Healer and Mystic. Emmet Fox, probably more than any other New Thought leader has influenced more people simple because, in his day he attracted wider audiences than anyone else for longer periods of time. To this day, Emmet Fox is read more widely and is understood more clearly than any other New Thought writer. Closet readers of Dr. Fox can be found in the Episcopal, Catholic, Baptist and Methodist churches, among others. His objective, as a New Thought teacher has always been, not to establish yet another religion, not to establish yet another set of religious doctrines, but to encourage individuals, whether they attend church or not, to develop their own creative power and to personally understand what God is, and what God is all about, and then to be able to relate that to their own lives. In His day, and to this day, Emmet Fox reached more people because he had a talent to speak and write with great clarity, and in a very dynamic way. His message was simple and direct. He said, "Sooner or later you will have to put God first in your life, God must become the only thing that really matters. It need not be and better not be the only thing in your life, but it must be the first thing." He said, "when that happens your life becomes simple, richer and infinitely more worthwhile." He brought new meaning to millions of people around the globe with his golden keys of health, inner peace and success.

In 1931, he became the pastor of The Church of the Healing Christ in New York city, founded by Dr. W. John Murray in 1906, and was called The First Church of Divine Science, in New York City. He was ordained a Divine Science Minister by Dr. Nona Brooks. This was the beginning of one of the most remarkable ministries in America. His Sunday morning lectures at the Hippodrome Theatre, the Manhattan Opera House and Carnegie Hall were attended by over 5000 people. His meditations were powerful and his sermons never lasted more than twenty minutes. He spoke to, and of God in the most personal and intimate terms. Over six hundred thousand copies of his book "Sermon on the Mount" have been distributed and are still popular today. It is in this remarkable book that he reveals a source of universal power that is rightly yours. "This power." states Dr. Fox. is the real source of all things that exist. It needs only to flow into your being and transform itself into health, into true prosperity, into inspiration, or into anything else you may be needing. The power is there. It is present everywhere. It belongs to nobody in particular because it belongs to all. It is waiting at all times for men and women to call it into use -not merely in crisis, but in every problem however small every day of your life. "The fact that most people do not suspect the existence of this Power does not change the fact that it is there," says Dr. Fox. "Remember that hardly anyone except a few philosophers suspected the existence of electricity, or the power of the steam, until a few generations ago, then these things were brought into the service of man and have transformed the world. The laws of Nature were just the same then as they are now; only people did not know that such a force existed, and so they had to go without. I believe many of the limitations and difficulties that people take for granted will be things of the past." In this book, Emmet Fox gives the keys to success in life by tapping into the realm of Infinite power. He teaches that man is a child of a perfect God.

Are any of you familiar with Unity? Awesome church that practices these principles ... it always feels like Home.

Namaste.

I too love Emmet Fox, he inspired me more than anything else when I was in my dark days and groping desperately for some spiritual connection.

Sermon on The Mount is also among my "sacred" recovery material and I love to read it from cover to cover about once a year and think about it based on where my recovery is today.

I am ordering some books today, so I'm glad I found this thread because I'd like to order something that perhaps I have not read by Emmet Fox.

Thanks for posting this.

Hugs

Thank you so much for the reminder, I love SR and the people here, It enriches my life on so many levels and allows me the freedoms to express and share with so many,,Im in a situation now that requires me to study and pass a exam in order to keep my job,,Its very hard for me, bad retention and study skills, not to mention low interest,,Yet with this lic So many new possibilities will become available to me,,So now I have a picture of the licence on my wall visualization, Im thanking god for the gift of completing my task, and knowing god will give me the power to do so, trust . Yet i still find myself questioning the path to get where im wanting to go,,is this the way ,,what im reading tells me i need to not focus on the problem only the solution and god,,for now the solution is study and move ahead, how i get to the goal of living in Hawaii with a good job is in his hands,Learning how to be empowered spiritually is a journey for sure, But over the last couple years of my sobriety i have seen how god winks at me and wow, its good to know he is all around me,,thanks again for the post,,keep them coming..

It should be pointed out that Emmet Fox had a strong influence on Bill Wilson and most of the first 100 AA members.

One of Bill's early sponcee's was the son of Emmet's personal secretary.

Knew that first point but didn't know the second.

Like Ann said above, Sermon on the Mount is my GO-TO book when I find myself feeling out of sorts. When I'm stressing, worried, afraid....and my usual routine isn't bringing me the relief I need I grab that book ASAP.

It's like the Big Book in that it seems little elves sneak new pages in there (surprisingly, pages that have my notes and highlights all over them already) that "I've never seen" before. LOL. That one book has done more for my outlook on life, my mental sobriety and my spiritual growth & sobriety than anything else I've done (in OR out of the AA program).

I learned how to forgive, the importance of thinking rightly (not just ACTING rightly), and a hundred other "biggies."

Absolutely FABULOUS book. Some may find it tough to read (kinda like the BB was the first time through) but it gets simpler with repetition.

Oh, and get the hard-cover......easier to highlight in bed and it'll likely do some traveling with you so the extra "strength" of the hardcover will come in handy.

Mike

I was a huge fan of Emmet's for a while and was so obsessed with him, I just had to read everything he wrote.

While I found his early works inspiring, his later works sound a little off-the-wall to me (he started describing the furniture in heaven). I suspect he went a little coo-coo in his later years.

Eric Butterworth is also a wonderful author. Discover the Power Within You was extremely powerful for me, as was In the Flow of Life.

Og Mandino is another who wrote some fairly brief books that were chuck full of spiritual inspiration.

Don't mean to divert this thread, but it's good for me to be reminded that some of my best reading in recovery was written long ago and yet still packs a punch today.

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread -- I have been reading Sermon on the Mount and LOVING it! ....especially enjoying it since I can clearly see how these principles influenced The Big Book. Way cool.

It's just what I needed to be reading now and is so comforting.
