| Being here and now When you're traveling at warp speed, as so many of us do (on autopilot, no less), you tend not to think much about what you're doing in and with your life. In the "busyness" of living, we lose ourselves as well as the precious moments of time. But our time on earth is the only time we have! When you concentrate on being fully present in the moment, the moments accululate over months and years into a life well lived.

| Begin Right Now Don't just do something, sit there. Take time now to look at what's going on around you. What do you see and hear? What do you feel? Stopping every once in a while makes you more aware of what you are doing when you start moving again.

| Begin Right Now Worry about right now. If you find yourself worrying about something that might happen tomorrow or some day, concentrate on today. take it one day at a time. And if that's to much to think about, take it one hour at a time.

| Cultivating Mindfulness This is it. In Wherever You Go, There You Are, Jon Kabat-Zinn suggests that you can cultivate mindfulness by paying attention to --- or capturing --- each moment in time. But trying to keep your attention focused on the here and now requries that you continuously remember to be aware of your focus. Use you breathing to help you do this. Tune into each breath --- feel it --- without feeling the need to change how you are breathing. In becoming more aware of your breathing, you become more concerned with the here and now.

| Leave the past behind. When your mind is cluttered with past experiences, especially negative ones, it drains energy and productivity from today. Repeat to yourself as often as needed each day: Where am I? Here. What time is it? Now.

| Focus on the task at hand. Whether you are washing dishes, driving to the store, doing your job, or helping your children with homework, focus all of your attention and energy on what you are doing.

| Listen to your thoughts. Don't judge them; just recognize and accept them. To help stay focused, you might even try to visualize your thoughts in a cloud.

One of my yoga instructors frequently reminds us to not judge ourselves or the thoughts we have. Thanks for the visualization suggestion.

| Listen to what you say. How often do you think or say, "I have to"? Replace this statement with "I choose to." It will relieve a lot of the pressure you place on yourself. And it will give you a whole new perspective.

| Look at where you spend your time and energy. Many times, we focus our energy, time, and attnetion on trivial matters to avoid dealing with larger, more important issues. A preoccupation with keeping a spotless house, for example, may be masking a communication problem in your marraige.

On the subject of not judging your thoughts but observing them instead....who is observing? It isnt the ego cos its the ego that produces the thoughts? So it is something else, the 'real' you? Your 'Buddha nature'?
