What if....

What if God wasn't a very large, overbearing figure, with flowing white hair, long beard, and outstretched arms waiting for us to figure it out?

What if he was more of human like figure much like us, walking beside us, breaking down our own barriers and just waiting for us to step out into the world and walk along with him?

What if he's just walking beside us, breaking those barriers down for us, waiting for us to simply step out of the confines we made, so he can simply join us in the creation of our own lives?

It couldn't be easier for us. Step outside of confinement, thru an exit we didn't even have to make. Take one step outside, and then let him in with us.

Ahh the ramblings of an addicts mind. LOL!

Wow, profound thoughts for so early in the day, Doug. And you have me thinking...a dangerous thing sometimes.

Although I might describe "my" concept of God as the large, powerful yet kind man with the flowing white beard...I "feel" Him as the spirit that walks with me every day. I talk to him like an invisible friend, I ask Him questions knowing it may take time before I get the answer, and I invite Him to go with me when I am scared.

But sometimes I feel a barrier exists. Maybe I'm pulling a "push" door? Maybe the barrier has been self-imposed all the time. Maybe.

Hugs

I just posted this in another Forum in regards to the "answers"-

Quote:
Alot of time is the past when've I asked for help, I wait for the reply in terms of booming thunder, a bolt of lightening, etc. Something that will obviously get my attention.

The reality, I've found is the answer comes in the form of a whisper, or in normal conversation with others. The little voice inside, underneath all my usual internal commotion. Or when I talk with others, his answer comes through them.
The answers, and the help, usually come fast, when we're "willing". Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes the answer is wait.

One thing for sure, don't ever ask/pray for patience, 'cause he can throw us some major roadblocks!

This post might be better for a separate thread....maybe....

he is walking beside me..each day...thru out the day...Sometimes holding my hand
Sometimes his hand is on my shoulder

And ...sometimes his hand is over my mouth ... lol

I used to question where he was...
I don't today...he is within and without but always present

The hardest part of recovery and finding my spirituality was all about patience, or lack of it. I had practiced just being still and listening for God's answers, and to this day I recall Him shouting "BE PATIENT AND JUST WAIT!!!!" as if I was deaf. I guess I was until I opened the ears of my heart and began listening.

And like Flutter says, He walks with me too. Sometimes He shoves me along, sometimes He trips me and makes me take a good look at where I may be going, and sometimes he just holds the light on the path ahead and I follow blindly, knowing He's leading my way. But He's always good company and never fails to show up when I ask Him along.

Hugs

Same for me Ann! You have a way with words that I can just picture what is happening.

It took me a while to find my God as I understand him. He is with me in my heart all the time, every day. I seem to rely on the Serenity Prayer along with his guidience to figure out where I am in a situation and if I can or cannot change it. Most of the time all I need to do is change my way of thinking and let go. :praying

My God is , by definition, undefinable. He exists out of the boxes of time and space.

GP, I hear what you are saying and "get it", it's very hard to define something as undefinable as God. I put him in the visuals I express, because that explains how my relationship is with Him, a personal way that I connect spiritually.

I like your post and how you express it, and hope you don't mind if I ask you how you connect spiritually with your visualization (or lack of it) with this Higher Power? Is there something you do to personalize it? You've known me long enough that I hope you know I ask that seriously and with respect, and if it's too personal I understand.

Wow, how do I visualize God ? Well, to simply understand Him, and to make Him more personal, I envision a human. (Moses had a glimpse of Him, but only from behind)

My God is the ultimate [insert your passion here]. If you are a scientist, He is the ultimate scientist. If you are an engineer, He is the ultimate engineer. If you are a musician, He is the ultimate musician. If you are a warrior, He is the ultimate warrior. He encompasses everything that is, was, and will be.

To be honest, there are times when the "channel" is open (or I'm trying to open it), I get almost afraid. My God is so powerful and all encompassing, that it it's like trying to communicate with the entire universe, or creation itself.

Wow, I like that vision, GP, thanks for sharing it and I'm glad you joined this thread.

Laying down (for a minute) whatever you think about Adam and Eve, if anything...

If "God" put them on Earth for the sole reason of having them share the experience of creation with Him...

Maybe, he does the same for us. He wants us to share the experience with him, of creating or making or forming our lives, while we're here. But we have free will, another gift from him. So we must decide to let him join us, and if he's breaking down the barriers that hold us back, all that's left for us to do is accept him, and let him lead the way.

Then we might pass beyond the people we always wanted to be, but rather, become people we never knew we could be....

what if ... we ... are inside God?

Try as I might -
I just can't 'picture' God ...
as anything separate from .. me.
If I get a pitcure .. at all it's the stars.

Kinda like my avatar, actually.

Very profound thoughts Doug.

Each time I come back to this thread, I start singing a song. Your words are more truth then the song is though.

One Hit Wonders Lyrics

Joan Osbourne

If God Was One of Us Lyrics

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

Wow, Doug, that is an awesome thought, just awesome.

After my morning coffee, I want to come back and think on this thread some more.

for me, if i want that "he, she, or it" to join me, i had to let go of that heliocentric thinking...

self will, free will and using the word Gods will...

again, for me, all three have to work, play and perform, as a fine tuned drum!

love

Don't think too hard Ann.

These are just thoughts I'm having as I learn and move around in my own recovery. Believe me, I'm not trying to create any new ways of any one person doing their own spiritual thing. That would constitute a form of control and make it all useless.

And Rusty, forgive my wording. (or not). Progress, not perfection is the road I'm working.

tht's why I tend to call 'It' .. The Infinite.

I dunno. Get a little 'zing' from it.

When my kids were growing up, I had an illustration I'd ripped out of OMNI magazine framed on the wall - it was the stereotypical Santa Claus looking "God" ... sitting on a cloud, legs crossed ... pyramid over his head ... blowing bubbles with a bubble pipe. The bubbles ... were each ... Earth's.

And of course the cloud was out in space.

That was the 'religious' picture in the house.

Then again - I also had colored ''Far Side' cartoons framed and over the back of the toilet so men could read 'em while they ... you know. My kids and I would 'count off' how long it took for someone to laugh when they went to the bathroom.

I am more interested in consciousness than conception these days, but consider this:

Imagine something that built the earth and the the vault of the heavens, hung the stars, planets, moons, and suns and then set the whole works in motion. Imagine something that is bigger than all of that, yet is all of that, yet is small enough to fit into your heart.

Trying to comprehend God is like trying to wrap a wash cloth around a rhino...it is simply too vast. To keep it simple, I try to just remember that God is Love. For whatever reason, my mental image of God has always been a body of water.
