Spritual but not religious

For me the hardest part of early recovery was the constant reference to God in the Big Book and Steps. While raised a Presbyterian (very liberal Protestant) I have a scientific background and didn't believe in the Christian concept of a Higher Power. And, in the beginning, praying to turn my will over to a higher power was impossible. Add to that, I spent a year or so trying to figure out what/who God is Finally I asked for guidance and found AA is broad enough to work for someone like me. I learned to pray "I am willing to be willing to turn my power over...." and I learned that I can choose anything as my HP. I choose the collective consciousness of AA rooms as my HP, and it still works for me.

I read ...

"let's put your particular concept of the creator aside for a moment and compare the difference between religion and spirituality. The way I see it, religion is man made by man to suit the needs of man. Religion talks the talk, and spirituality walks the walk. In spirituality we honor the existence of all creation including ourself. In AA, as we practice the 12 Steps in all our affairs, we are walking the talk..."

I like the way that sounds, Mal.

I was raised a Baptist in the days where hellfire and damnation were preached. I always believed in God, but I believed in His mercy and love, not his wrath.

Today I embrace the good in all sects and denominations. I feel the warmth of Native American prayer, the courage of Hebrew endurance and love, the wisdom of Buddist theology, and mostly the energy of one heart connecting with another spiritually and universally.

I believe in a greater power, who I choose to call God. It doesn't matter to me what anyone else thinks of my beliefs or what they believe themselves, as long as we honour the good in each other.

Hugs
