Sir Elton John 16 years sober

Sir Elton John was on the Ellen Show today. Talked about getting married. Then said he was very happy and had not had drugs or alcohol in 16 years. He said he went to rehab and it was a very good experience, while there he learned how to listen and learned all about himself and how to have a relationship on a 50/50 basis. Always before he expected everyone to change for him. It was very touching, I got chills listening to him. This was paraphrased and I'm certain it isn't exactly like he said it. If anyone can add to this please do. I was very moved by him today. He ROCKS!!!!

Thumbs up Awesome Recovery

Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

I knew that Sir Elton was sober and that it was close to my own sobriety date. I didnt see Ellen today so i just wanted to say thanks for sharing what u saw on her show.

I have to agree with what Sir Elton said about Rehab and it being a good experience. Especially learning how to listen and learn about himself. I too went to Rehab as a way of family intervention back in Aug 90. Now 15 yrs later, i still recall everything about that experience as if it were yesterday.

Today as we hear from other Celebraties how they got clean and sober is such an inpiration for me to continue on my own journey in recovery.

Thanks for letting me share.

Hi CarolD

They never mentioned whether he was in a recovery program. I did a Google search to see what I could find, but nothing other than he was sober and how long. I appreciate you mentioning that. How do you know he still goes to meetings?

I did another Google search and found this from.......

The Knitting Circle: Popular Culture

Around 1990 he was leading a dangerous lifestyle, being an alcoholic and was addicted to cocaine. He made a turnaround after checking into Parkside Lutheran Hospital in Chicago and attending 2000 meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Over-Eaters Anonymous.

This is just a great post.

There are lots of other people in the public eye who are sober:

Mary Tyler Moore
Kitty Dukakis
Ali McGraw
Drew Barrymore
Natalie Cole

Can you think of others and add to the list?

Elton has always been my favorite musician. I remember going to his concerts when I was in my teens and seeing him so blasted that he couldn't look the audience in the eye. Then he found recovery and got a whole new lease on life. I am so PROUD of him.

Congrats on 16 years, Sir Elton! You are so very loved and supported!

According to http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/celebs/celeb_quotes.html

Hilary Duff says, "I've never done any drugs in my life. Party means for me hanging out with my friends and having a good time. You don't need drugs to have a good time and I hope none of you guys ever take any drugs and if somebody offers them to you just say NO!! People don't need drugs to be cool or hip, please guys don't do any drugs!!"

Freddie Prinze Jr. likes to stay clean and sober: "I've never done drugs or even smoked a cigarette. I don't like the idea of being controlled [by drugs]. "

We have our Dame Edna, who goes to the city meeting when she/he is out here. Also, billy Conolly is very friendly with the CEO of one of our largest rehabs here in melbourne, and he comes out once a year in October, to be a speaker at one of their AA meetings.

The usual TV stars, ( from here) go to the suburban meetings. It is disconcerting to be in the chair, calling speakers, and know you have seen someone before, but not know where, then to realised its on ya TV every night at 8 pm! LOL

I live near Atlanta Ga. where he has a home.
I was not breaking his anonymity when I posted.

When I got sober in D.C. we had many famous people who attended AA when in the city...my home group had some as members.

They were there for the same reason I was.
No fuss was made or expected.

Robbie Williams!!!
Melanie Griffiths
Lead Singer of Red Hot Chilli Peppers Anthony Kedis

Marian Keyes Famous Irish Author

All proud members of AA/NA...we're all fighting the same battle, but I do especially admire famous people because their contexts are filled with drugs and alcohol and mad adulation, millions of dollars, etc etc and it must be very hard to stay grounded and clean and sober!

Great job everyone!

Of course you can't pin your recovery to someone famous.

But, in my opinion, when addicts in the public eye, live healthy and productive lives, it shows society that we can recover and we can succeed. It's a positive thing and maybe helps to alleviate some of the stigma attached to alcoholism.

I agree. Last night I was watching 'American Dream' on CNBC. Prolly the ONLY one watching.. lol Anyway businessman Red McCombs says he has been sober since 1977. I enjoyed his story exept for the part where he said all addicts are liar's, cheats & theives.
