ativan withdrawal?

i was prescribed 0.5 mg of ativan every 8 hours for 4 days for my alcohol detox. I would take 2 daily, like prescribed. Is it possible to withdrawal from such a low dose?

Anything is possible I suppose, but if it was prescribed by your doctor and taken taken as directed I'd doubt you'd have major withdrawal after 4 days. Did your doctor say anything about it?

In my experience its hard to get addicted to a substance in a few days. Benzo's are something to be very cautious with but if you're taking them as prescribed, and only for a week or so, you should be fine.

You seem to have a lot of apprehension about your detox. Why not call your dr. to address your concerns?

I would consult a physician but I remember tapering off it.

Benzodiazepines are cross-tolerant with alcohol. If your nervous system is sensitive to sedative-hypnotic withdrawal due to several detox episodes, it is certainly possible.

If you start to feel weird, definitely go to the ER.

Absolutely! It does not happen to everybody, but I hear it is pure torture for those it happens to. There is a GREAT forum that addresses this. If you inbox me i will give you the name. Don't want violate any policies here.

so let me get this straight... After only 4 days of use, 2 ativans a day after 8 hours at .5 mg i can have withdrawals from them? That seems silly to even use them for alcohol withdrawal if after that you have to deal with benzo withdrawal. today is my 5th day sober and i noticed a bit of anxiety returning after not taking ativan. Last time i took it was at 12 pm thursday so its been about 24 hours.

You're very very early. You may not need Ativan to stave off the serious withdrawals but you can still very much have anxiety. Ativan doesn't take care of withdrawal completely. Just makes it more comfortable and more safe. Sooooo what you're feeling is normal, I think.

Again, why not talk to the dr?

It doesn't seem likely that you'd develop an addiction to it after only four days. The anxiety you're feeling is probably from the alcohol withdrawal, and, if so, will get better with time. Ask your doctor.

Anxiety from alcohol withdrawal is very common. Alcohol withdrawal can last several days, fortunately, you are past the danger zone.
Drugs can affect us all differently. I personally get awful rebound anxiety from even a couple of small doses of benzos. Perhaps it is that!
Congratulations on 4 days, that is wonderful.

Short term benzos are pretty much to go-to in the initial withdrawal phase to keep you from and serious effects like seizures, hallucinations, and completely freaking out. They basically just get you through the initial hell, but that's the easy part. Staying sober and getting your life back on track is where the real sobriety journey begins.
