Rewards on my Sobriety Journey
Rewards on my Sobriety Journey
One of the counsellors I had in a program said that you should reward yourself with something when you achieve a sobriety goal. He said, think of how much money you are saving now, so why not give yourself a reward once in a while to commemorate your accomplishments.
Music has always been a powerful tool to work through my emotions in life. Certain songs help me through periods of sadness, I remember songs that were playing in the background at pivotal events, and others conjure up the feelings of happy times. I had some old LP records from my youth, but nothing to play them on, so my reward at 3 months of sobriety was an vinyl record player. Each month after this I gave myself a $20 budget to go out to used record stores and sales to add more to my collection. While I only started with about 15 records, after a year I have built this up to 160.
I listen to them during times of reflection, emotion, work and play; they still help me in my mental well-being. They now have an added dimension of a reminder of the time passage in my sobriety journey and what I have attained. I hope this collection continues to grow and be a concrete reminder for me for how great life is in sobriety if I ever feel the need to drink again.
So it is a simple concept ... Reward yourself!

Rewards are a good thing. I like massages! My daughter is a huge record collector (I guess that's all the rage now with the younger set....) and she finds amazing stuff at garage sales. Sometimes the records are beat up but often times she gets really collectible albums for super cheap!
